Am asking the question so that I can give a thorough answer when
asked. do you know of any written texts to help me in my full
understanding of this side of the web. I want to be able to get people
to advertise on my site (eventually) and want to have as much of an
understanding and knowledge as possible. rather than saying hey
everybody else advertises so why don't you, I can say more about what
it can do for them!

Advertising in the website, gives additional revenue for the website
as a publisher. All about selling the webspace. Its a good revenue
model for sites which are popular, attracting large traffic and
offering free services.

Advertiser point of view :

This gives and additional traffic for the website, The thumb rule is
that there is a probability of atleast 50% of those who see the
advertisement clicks the same to know about is. (if the advertisement
is attractive)
