Dear Highvoltageblond,
The Institute of International Education writes, that "Approximately
72% of U.S. undergraduates who end up studying abroad enrol in a study
abroad program specially organized for students like them. The sponsor
may be a U.S. college or university (the student's own, another, or a
consortium) with which it has reached an agreement. Or the sponsor
could be a domestic organization other than a college or university,
or an overseas university or organization, often as part of its
program for other international students. However, depending on your
own institution's policies with regard to transfer credit from other
domestic or overseas institutions, a host of other options may exist
for you." (Source: http://handbook.iiepassport.org/, "Enrolment
Options").
The US News and World Report publish each year a survey of the best
ranked universities and colleges in the United States. Among their
categories, there is also the one on institutions with the "Most
students studying abroad" (see
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/brief/webex/abroad_brief.php).
These institutions, especially when their ranking/prestige in general
is calculated, could give us good idea on study abroad programmes.
Dartmouth College (NH) (http://www.dartmouth.edu/) - an Ivy League
college, 56% of whose students are engaged in study abroad programmes,
is on the top of both lists. "The four main categories of
opportunities for off-campus work are Dartmouth Language Study Abroad
(LSA and LSA+); Dartmouth Foreign Study Programs (FSP);
Dartmouth Exchange Programs; and Transfer Credit from another
four-year, degree-granting, academic institution unaffiliated with
Dartmouth College." (Source: Dartmouth College, LSA/LSA+ programmes
take place in a variety of places: Jerusalem, Tokyo, Berlin, Rome,
Siena, Salvador (Brazil), Barcelona and more. FSPs take place in many
places in the world: Florence, Trinidad, etc. Exchange Programmes take
place in variety of places, most notably (as "exotic") are in Japan
and Denmark. You could contact
mailto:off.campus.programs@dartmouth.edu for more details. Moreover,
under programmes of the Dickey Centre, students travel to exotic
destinations, such as Bangladesh, Tonga, Peru, China, Dominica, Costa
Rica and many other places. Margot de l'Etoile treats internships
(mstar@dartmouth.edu); Christianne Hardy Wohlforth treats the research
grants programme (mailto:dickey.center@dartmouth.edu);
In Bowdoin College (ME) - also a prestigious college, 50% of the
students participate in off-campus programmes. Colby-Bates-Bowdoin
Off-Campus Study Program is a study away programs for junior-year
students in (among other places) Cape Town, South Africa and Quito,
Ecuador (See http://www.bowdoin.edu/cbbaway/) - their contact email is

Centre College (http://www.centre.edu/) - ranked as a top 50 national
liberal arts college by U.S. News and is featured in Loren Popes
Colleges That Change Lives (top 40) - 67% of the students participate
in a variety of programmes: "Centre operates residential sites for its
own students in England (London), France (in Strasbourg, across the
Rhine River from Germany), and Latin America (in Merida, Mexico). We
also have exchange programs with schools in Japan and Northern
Ireland. Some Centre students study at the University of Reading (near
London) each year, as well. About 100 Centre students each year spend
a term or more at one of these sites. The costs for these programs are
essentially the same as studying in Danville. (Students do pay their
own airfare.)
In addition, many Centre professors offer shorter, more focused trips
during the short CentreTerm. In the recent past, Centre students have
studied primates in Barbados; international relations in India; Far
Eastern culture in Japan; the roots of the Bible in Rome and Turkey;
history in Vietnam; religion in Nicaragua; art and music in Italy,
Germany, and the Czech Republic; anthropology in Spain and Morocco;
economics in Jamaica; history in the Central African Republic; and
sociology in South Africa.
During the 2004 CentreTerm, Centre students will be able to study
biology in the Bahamas, volcanos in New Zealand, and music and
anthropology in Spain and Morocco, among other choices. Some
scholarship money is available for the three-week CentreTerm trips,
which typically cost between $1,200 and $3,000." (Source: Centre

I hope this answered your question. In order to find an answer, I
looked through lists (such as the ones in the US News and World
Report) of highly ranked and prestigious universities/business
schools. Later, I crossed this information with that found in the US
News and World Report ranking of universities with off-campus
activities. Finally, I took that list and searched for each university
with:
(A) Terms such as: prestige, prestigious, ranking, reputation
(B) Terms such as: "off campus" "study abroad".
If you need any further clarifications on this answer, please let me
know. I'd be pleased to clarify my answer before you rate it. |

Dear Highvoltageblond,
First of all, thank you for your clarification request. Yes, I think
Harvard would fit - I took only the first 10 institutions that are
highly ranked and spend relatively high amounts on off-campus
education. I apologise for the misunderstanding. However, I think that
there is some correlation between the amount of cash spent on
travelling and the academic status of the university in general, and
whether it is private or not.
I don't think you have worded your question too vaguely. However,
sometimes even the best worded questions fall a victim to
misunderstanding, as not all minds think alike.
If you would like me to, I could add some highly ranked prestigious
institutions/business schools that are currently not listed. Fortune
listed universities, that have the biggest endowment (Julia Boorstin,
2001, "Outsmarting the Street" Fortune
http://www.fortune.com/fortune/investing/articles/0,15114,374095,00.html).
Those were Harvard, Yale, University of Texas, Princeton and Stanford.
Of them: -
Harvard - Has several different exclusive programmes for students.
Among them, "The Harvard Summer School offers several courses each
year that are conducted abroad by term-time Harvard faculty. These
courses generally focus on language study and other work closely
related to the program site. The courses to be offered in 2003 are the
Harvard Summer Program in Shanghai, China; The Harvard Summer Program
in Munich, Germany; The Harvard Summer Program in Forli', Italy; The
Harvard Olympia Summer Program for Comparative Cultural Studies; and
The Harvard Summer Program in Santiago, Chile."
(http://www.summer.harvard.edu/ ; 51 Brattle St, Cambridge, MA

Harvard students. However, the main organising body for study abroad
programmes is the Office of International Programs

Another good source for the type of institutions you're after, is
Forbes ranking of the business schools that give you the best return
for your money - in terms of salary after graduation. This list also
provides information on the level of income of the graduates before
graduation (1996). It lists IMD (Switzerland), Harvard, INSEAD
(France), London (UK), and Wharton as the best schools in those terms
(Forbes Top Business Schools,
http://www.forbes.com/lists/home.jhtml?passListId=95&passYear=2001&passListType=Company)
For Wharton, There are several possibilities to study abroad, as you
could read at http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/curriculum/intrntnl.html
. Concerning contact details, I'm afraid I've found mostly the
business admissions office details:

In addition: -
MIT - http://web.mit.edu/career/www/study.html - MIT Office of Career
Services and Preprofessional Advising keeps track of each student
studying away from the Institute--both abroad and in the U.S. Please
notify Hannah Bernstein once you have been admitted to a program of
study abroad (e-mail: hannahb@mit.edu, 12-170)
Regarding your business organisations question, I began to work on it,
but found it hard to find an authoritative, comprehensive list of
"prestigious" organisations. The ones I thought of so far are:
+Association of Financial Professionals, =Chief Executive
Organization, +International Business Association, International
Business Fellows, International Trade Leaders Club Million Dollar
Round Table , Court of the Table (COT); the United Way, The World
President's Organization and the Young Entrepreneurs Association. It
is very difficult to find where - and especially how (through which
organiser) they conduct their conferences. YEO mention that "Members
can take advantage of YEO's travel relationship with International
based Navigant Travel in Chicago. As the organization's official
travel agency for all YEO conferences and meetings. Navigant
International guarantees discounted fares that are unavailable
elsewhere." (Source: Partnerships
http://www.yeo.org/Public/Benefits/Partnerships.aspx).
Last but least, it is well known among patient and med students that
most top doctors spend their time flying from one conference to
another, usually in exotic and interesting places. Maybe you should
consider this option as well.
