Hello ciskoe-ga
As a fellow Santa Clara alum, I recall items from the alumni
newsletter about Jim Farwell -- especially in the years that he was
involved with crew. I thought it would be easy to find his obituary
but I havent been able to track it down. In the process I came across
some information that you might find interesting even if it isnt
the obituary. Enjoy!

Jay Farwell Profile
Jay Farwell begins his fifth year at the helm of the Santa Clara men's
crew program.
Farwell's ties to the Santa Clara crew program dates back to his
father Jim who started the crew program at Santa Clara with classmates
in 1965. His father then moved on to coach the program for 20 years.

"It's amazing how many people either worked here or met their current
husband or wife here," says Sue, who knows of what she speaks. She is
the widow of longtime Los Gatan Jim Farwell, whotogether with
business partner Jack McNamarafounded Mountain Charley's as a
restaurant and saloon in 1972.

Today's photograph of Santa Clara University's varsity male crew shows
a woman coxswain shouting cadence and controlling the rudder. The cox
starts the action with "ready all" or perhaps "ready y'all." The sport
was started at SCU by the late Jim Farwell, and Lexington was their
practice course--an excellent course except that the width was
unpredictable because it depended on how much rainfall there had been.

History by: Jim Ojala, PLU Crew 1965-1969
One member of that Lute lightweight boat was Jim Farwell, a former
Santa Clara oar serving in the Army at Fort Lewis. He later coached at
Santa Clara and played a pivotal role in establishing close ties
between the PLU and Santa Clara rowing programs. PLU crews stayed at
SCU during 1968 Spring Break on a rowing tour of the Bay Area (PLU
Crews first trip to California), and PLU hosted SCUs crews when they
came up to Seattle for the Western Sprints a month or so later.
Exchanges continued for some time after, but by now I'm sure theyre a
thing of the past. Tragically, Jim passed away from cancer a few years
ago, far too young.
