Question ID: 210852
I am a software developer with an idea and the possible funding to
develop a tool/product to interface with SAP. I have very limited
exposure to SAP and have some high level questions.

What will I need to develop this tool for SAP?

Besides the need to speak German and have really expensive software
developers with lots of talent… more specifically, I would like to
know:

1. How do I develop a tool for SAP? Do I need to buy a development
version license to the product or can I develop it externally somehow?

2. What kind of hardware at a minimum do I need to run SAP? Is it for
the PC/Unix/Linux or a combination of these? Can it run on a single
machine or small network?

3. What languages do you develop in for SAP? Is it proprietary? Is it
just simply a library that you interact with that can communicate via
Win32 calls, ActiveX, Corba, something else?

4. For the GUI of my tool, would I be creating an ‘external
application’ or would I be modifying the way SAP appears? Would I be
writing to the SAP GUI interface or creating my own?

5. What are my choices and alternatives to the above?

Thank you.

I have almost 4-yrs experience with SAP Development Tool and currently
working for an implementation. I would be more than happy to answer
your questions. If you happen to have a good business plan with your
tool, I can go further for more details and maybe .. just maybe,
interested in your product.

Below are just some general answers to your general questions:
1. How do I develop a tool for SAP? Do I need to buy a development
version license to the product or can I develop it externally somehow?

A: It depends on the nature of your tool. If it is an external tool,
than SAP provides hundreds of RFC calls to its core engine. If it is
an internal tool, you must buy SAP, install it, and then develop it
within SAP environment.
The development environment is within SAP itself.

2. What kind of hardware at a minimum do I need to run SAP? Is it for
the PC/Unix/Linux or a combination of these? Can it run on a single
machine or small network?

A: PC is sufficient. I don't think you need to go further if it's only
for your development effort. Single machine? Yes. Small network?
Definitely yes.

3. What languages do you develop in for SAP? Is it proprietary? Is it
just simply a library that you interact with that can communicate via
Win32 calls, ActiveX, Corba, something else?

A: The programming language is called ABAP. It also has hundreds of
readily-availaible RFC calls for you to use from external application.

4. For the GUI of my tool, would I be creating an ‘external
application’ or would I be modifying the way SAP appears? Would I be
writing to the SAP GUI interface or creating my own?

A: You can do both, depends on your design.

5. What are my choices and alternatives to the above?

A: I can't answer this unless you give me more details. Please contact
me if you are interested.

regards,
The Doc!

Is thedoc a researcher? That was what I was looking for... I'll pay
him if possible.

BTW... was this question under priced? Whenever I see a researcher put

picture that they are irritated and annoyed...

SAP for Automotive
In a Field This Competitive, Players Need an Edge. The SAP for
Automotive Edge.
A century ago, the automotive industry invented the model for modern
manufacturing: the mass production of nearly identical products.
Customers didn't get much choice, but that didn't matter. In those
days, market growth was unlimited and customers were easily pleased.
Today, manufacturers compete globally. And the trend toward
make-to-order manufacturing -- filling individual customer
requirements rather than make-to-stock -- has put new demands on
manufacturers and dealers. Customers want what they want, when they
want it.
The Fast Track to Success
Success depends on speed: speed in product development, speed in
product assembly, and speed in product delivery to dealers and
customers. Manufacturers must closely manage armies of suppliers and
partners to make certain that the correct systems and components are
delivered where and when they are needed. Collaboration among all the
industry players -- suppliers, OEMs, dealers, and customers -- is
essential.
Streamlined and Seamless
The SAP for Automotive solution portfolio is designed to meet the
specific needs of the automotive industry by linking complex business
processes into a logical flow, maximizing efficiency and satisfying
customers' expectations.
