Question ID: 211828
I need to know how to setup a Compaq Deskpro 286 to recognize two
drive controllers. I have two hard drives that will not work on the
same controller. The two controllers I have have the following
number:
1985 Compaq Computer Corp. FLPY/PRN/SER/WINCH Diagram No. 000337-000
BD No 000330-001 Rev K." I need to know jumper/dip switch settings as
well as any other information required to get the computer to
recognize both cards. I think I have the proper jumper settings for
the hard drives.

Yes. The drives work individually and both the drive contollers work
individually. But when I put both controller cards in I get a drive
controller error. (The floppy drives wonk work when this happens
either.) Because of the type of drives, I can't set them up as a
Master/Slave. (The old Magnetic Peripherals drive will only work as a
Master or Slave with another Magnetic Peripherals drive.) Because of
this, I need two drive controllers with one hard drive connected to
each of them.

These drives are pretty old too so I don't think they have the cable
select feature. There are jumper settings to set the drives as
Master, Slave, or Single. Right now, I've got them both set to Single
since they're on different controllers. But I've tried setting one as
Master and one as Slave (and vice versa) but they simply won't work on
the same controller.

Thanks for responding.

Oh by the way. The two drives are a Conner SP-321 and a Magnetic
Peripherals 94208-51. I think both of these companies are now owned
by Seagate, but Seagate didn't have any information on them.

Make that a Conner CP-321 (not SP-321).

I reckon that you have two add-on IDE controller cards plugged in the
add-on slots (ISA or PCI)? If that's what you mean, they really won't
work. One motherboard cannot recognize two controller cards, in the
same way as it cannot recognize two different video cards or two sound
cards.

OK. But the Compaq Setup ver 8.0 disk lists Disk Controller 1 and
Disk Controller 2 as options. The problem is, when I actually HAVE
two drive controllers, the floppy drives don't work so I can't run the
setup disk to tell it what drive is connected. There are some
switches on the controller cards that I thought might allow me to
"tell" the controller card which Disk Contoller it was (1 or 2) so I
was hoping somebody would know what the switches are for and how I
would set them up.
