What does "Cedex" mean? I've seen it attached to names of cities in
France, such as Nantes Cedex, Paris Cedex, Labege Cedex, etc. What
does it mean? Does it mean downtown? Or a suburb of a city maybe?

Hello Orrd-ga,

CEDEX is the postal abbreviation for ”Courrier d'entreprise à
distribution exceptionnelle” which in English means ”Express mail
service for bulk users.”

From the Business French-English Glossary:

The publication “Guide to Postal Codes and Address Formats – France
explains CEDEX. Here is a short excerpt:

Many cities and regions have special addresses identified by CEDEX,
which follows the name of the town. The are generally Post boxes,
government offices, public services offices, and large volume users.

“In principle CEDEX is only used for places where a large volume of
mail arrives. Only the Post Office can give you a CEDEX address. The
CEDEX mail is supposedly sorted apart and delivered apart from normal
mail. This is simply because it is more efficient for the Post
Office.”

From Google Newsgroups dated May 31, 2003:

Is CEDEX a postal code or a suburb of Paris?

”CEDEX means "Courrier d'Entreprise à Distribution EXceptionnelle".
It's a French postal service that assigns a unique postal code to
selected firms. Companies then get a specific treatment, special
distribution services, etc. There is Cedex everywhere in France, not
only Paris.”

Question on French & European conventions:

CEDEX means that the postal code is not a regular geographic code, but
one assigned to a corporation, government agency, etc. who receive a
large volume of mail.

Hi,

Just a quick example of when this is used. For TV show competitions,
rather than to get viewers to write down a whole address with name,
street, etc. They just need to write down the name of the TV channel,
the show, and the CEDEX number with the city, it makes it much easier
to give out addresses to a lot of people.

Thanks.
