Hello dangyatjan-ga,

Thank you for your question.

From Lotus Life Feb/Mar 2002:

“From Lotus' earliest days every car was fitted with a nose badge
comprising of Colin Chapman's monogram (ACBC) on a green quadrant
background which is superimposed on a yellow circular plaque.”

You may read about the history of the lotus badge and see the images
of the badges over the years here:
http://www.lotusespritworld.co.uk/EHistory/lotusbadge.html

Description and design of the badge:

“The letters at the top of the triangular green lozenge are " A - C -
B - C ". They are the initials of Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman,
the Designer, Builder, and Founder of LOTUS.”

“Colin Chapman calls his car a LOTUS because once you drive it, you
will forget all the others.”

“In the logo, the initials are larger than the word LOTUS,
for-Lotus-is-indeed Anthony-Colin-Bruce-Chapman.”

“The triangular lozenge is colored British Racing Green,
which is the color designated for cars of British origin that will be
competing in international events.

“The lozenge is placed on a field of yellow, signifying the sunny days
that Chapman hoped would lie ahead for his company.”

“In April of 1968, World Champion Driver Jim Clark was killed at
Hockenheim, Germany, while driving a Lotus Type 48 in a Formula 2
race. From that day foreward, all LOTUS cars have worn a black nose
badge, out of respect for his passing.”

Hello Bobbie7.ga,

Thank yu very much for your reply to my question. I am aware of the
badge that you describe, but was actually thinking of another that
used an image of a lotus flower. I seem to recall seeing this in an
article in "Road & Track" magazine from the 1970's which is why I used
1970 as a cutoff date (to be sure it was the emblem of the "old" Lotus
company, i.e., prior to their reorganization).

If you are sure that the flower was NEVER used in any way (I would
agree with the badge you indicate as the one used on the bonnet) I
would appreciate knowing that too.

Thanks again.

Best regards,
dangyatjan-ga

Dear Dangyatjan-ga,

After many hours of searching through hundreds of links I’m sorry to
say that I have not been able to find one instance of a lotus flower
used on a Lotus automobile.

In your original question you asked “I would like to see/know the logo
or badge design for Lotus automobiles that was in use prior to 1970.”

I believe I have answered your original question as asked.

In your clarification you mention that you are seeking a lotus flower
design: “If you are sure that the flower was NEVER used in any way (I
would agree with the badge you indicate as the one used on the bonnet)
I would appreciate knowing that too.”

I can honestly say that after many hours of research, I was not able
to find any online evidence that the lotus flower or lotus blossom was
used for the Lotus Automobile.

In the second part of your clarification you mention that you “recall
seeing this in an article in "Road & Track" magazine from the 1970's.”

It appears that your clarification, while related, is beyond the scope
of the original question.

My advice is that you post a new question requesting the article or a
source for the purchase of the "Road & Track" magazine where the lotus
flower is mentioned. Include any details, facts or phrases that you
may remember from the article or from the magazine cover. Perhaps
another researcher will be able to locate a vendor of the magazine.

Sincerely,
Bobbie7-ga
