Hello jim1946

These data are available from the Bureau of Labor Statistics:
http://www.bls.gov/ Select “National Unemployment Rate” from the
links on the top right hand side.

This takes you to:
http://www.bls.gov/cps/home.htm

Select “Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate” and click on the
dinosaur to retrieve the last 10 years of data. You can then adjust
the dates to be displayed. You can request data in graph as well as
tabular form.

For your period of interest, overall unemployment rates are:

Year Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun
2000 4.0 4.1 4.0 3.8 4.1 4.0
Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
         4.1 4.1 4.0 3.9 4.0 3.9
Year Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun
2001 4.1 4.2 4.2 4.4 4.4 4.6
Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
 	4.6 4.9 5.0 5.4 5.6 5.8
Year Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun
2002 5.6 5.6 5.7 5.9 5.8 5.8
Jul Aug Sep Oct Nov Dec
        5.8 5.8 5.7 5.8 5.9 6.0
Year Jan Feb Mar Apr May Jun
2003 5.7 5.8 5.8 6.0 6.1 6.4

In order to break the figures down, you need to go to
http://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsatabs.htm
and select the table you require. You can then select the results to
be displayed according to your criteria. In order to get a breakdown
by age, select:
Table A-7. Selected unemployment indicators, seasonally adjusted
http://www.bls.gov/webapps/legacy/cpsatab7.htm

In the data presented below, I have retrieved the figures for
unemployment rates by age. However, you can break them down further
by sex and family status, and display actual numbers of unemployed as
well as unemployment rates.

Apologies for the pig's ear the Google Answer box made of the tables.
We have no real formatting capabilities, and all my efforts to make
this legible have borne little fruit. I hope that you can read the
data sufficiently. Each lines contains data for 6 months. My answer
does also tell you how to generate the data from scratch at the BLS
web site, where you will find the out far clearer to read.
jim1946-ga rated this answer:5 out of 5 stars and gave an additional tip of: $5.00
exactly what I wanted, super.
