Are you looking only for women or are males acceptable as well?

Hi! I was able to find speakers for this kind of topic. There were no
contact information though for individual speakers. Would contact
information for the organization of the seminars or conferences be ok
as well instead of the individual speakers?

Thanks! :)

Clarification of Question by loebandco-ga on 29 Jul 2003 05:17 PDT
Thank you for your notes ... two clarifications:

1. Gender does not matter
2. We don't want conference information, we want people we can
contact for interviews, so, the informaiton on seminars or conferences
would not be good ... actual organization information is ideal.

Also, for clarification, we are not looking to 'attend' seminars on
mothers, motherhood, etc. We are writing a book and looking for
experts to interview for comment on our hypothesis. Professors, Media
people, etc. would be the MOST useful.

Thanks for your interest.

Dear Marta,

Here are some of the people you may contact:

Dr. Vangie Bergum, who has written several books, among them:
A Child on Her Mind : The Experience of Becoming a Mother (Hardcover,
February, 1997).

Dr. Bergum's current research project is Relational Ethics: Foundation
for Health Care (SHHRC 1997-2001). This interdisciplinary research
explores health care ethics from a relational perspective. The themes
identified as being important to ethical relationships in Phase I
(Toward an Ethic of Nurturance, SSRHC 1993-1997) continue to be
developed in Phase II (Relational Ethics: Foundation for Health Care).
Current ethical and philosophical theory are considered and extended
in determining how ethical relationships are experienced in health
care practice. Research into relationships between health care
providers and recipients of health care focuses on the practical
situations where ethical action occurs. Specific health care areas of
genetic counselling, mental health, and the relationships between
health care providers serve as the situations to explore how
previously identified themes are expressed.

Did you come across any other 'experts' who have been quoted in
articles or speak on Moms as a topic?

Clarification of Answer by aresearcher-ga on 30 Jul 2003 00:13 PDT
Marta,

I need clarification for your request for clarification. First of all,
what do you mean by 'expert'? Define it. When you say you need 'other
experts on the subject', do you mean the information wasn't adequate,
the candidates did not meet your criteria or that there simply weren't
enough candidates on the list? In saying you are looking for an
'expert', are you looking for a graduate or professor of studies done
on motherhood? It is common knowledge that no such subject is taught
as a course in universities (or institutes of learning). Then don't
these candidates qualify as 'experts' on motherhood, since they have
interviewed numerous real-life mothers and devoted their time to deep
observations and studies on the subject, also drawing from their own
experiences, synymous to conducting research on the subject?
Furthermore, you did not state from where you want these candidates to
come; do you want international sources or do they need to come from a
specific country? In addition, your fee of $35 does not warrant a
thorough enough search for telephone numbers of potential sources, as
calling these sources in an attempt to confirm their contacts can be
very costly.

Dr. Vangie Bergum has written a book entitled 'A Child on Her Mind :
The Experience of Becoming a Mother'. Dr. William Sears has written
'Creative Parenting: The Complete Guide to Child Care', while Ann
Crittenden has spoken at the Women Work!'s 2001 National Conference on
the vital role of mothers in raising children. She is also the author
of 'The Price of Motherhood: Why the Most Important Job in the World
is Still the Least Valued'.

Anyhow, two other candidates have been added to the list (should you
have merely needed more candidates):

Nina Barrett and Dr. Gayle Peterson. Nina wrote 'I Wish Someone Had
Told Me: A Realistic Guide to Early Motherhood' and
'The Playgroup: Three Women Contend With the Myths of Motherhood'.

Gayle Peterson, MSSW, LCSW, PhD is a family therapist specializing in
prenatal and family development. She trains professionals in her
prenatal counseling model and is the author of 'An Easier Childbirth,
Birthing Normally' and her latest book, 'Making Healthy Families'. Her
articles on family relationships appear in professional journals and
she is an oft-quoted expert in popular magazines such as Woman's Day,
Mothering and Parenting. She is a clinical member of The Association
for Marriage and Family Therapy and a Diplomate with the National
Association of Social Work. She also serves on the advisory board for
Fit Pregnancy Magazine.

Dr. Gayle Peterson has written family columns for ParentsPlace.com,
igrandparents.com and the Bay Area's Parents Press newspaper. She has
also hosted a live radio show, "Ask Dr. Gayle" on
www.ivillage.com/music/, answering questions on family
relationships and parenting. Dr. Peterson has appeared on numerous
radio and television interviews including Canadian broadcast as a
family and communications expert in the twelve part documentary
"Baby's Best Chance". She is former clinical director of the Holistic
Health Program at John F. Kennedy University in Orinda, California and
adjunct faculty at the California Institute for Integral Studies in
San Francisco. A national public speaker on women's issues and family
development, Gayle Peterson practices psychotherapy in Berkeley,
California and is a wife, mother of two adult children and a proud
grandmother.

I appreciate all your questions and challenges. A few additional
points for clarification:

1. Domestic is preferred (US)
2. Study authors or professors would be ideal
3. Department heads at Universities with a Womens Study program would
help
4. All of the parenting and/or preganancy publications have experts
... can you find those?

While my request is vague, the reason for my clarification is that I
know there are other people out there (Dr. Gayle Peterson is GREAT!
That is exactly who we need!) Oh, and Dr. Sears is absolutely an
expert ... unfortunately I think that he is ONE of many ... did you
come across Dr. Brazelton?? How about 'The Girlfriends Guide' author?

If you feel the $$ is not right than we should discuss as I believe it
is appropriate to the search ...

Dear Marta,

Seeing that I am out of resources, as I live outside of your region,
here's what you can do: rate my answers, then post another question.
This time, however, state the information you've already been
provided. Hopefully, another researcher (within easier reach of
potential sources) will be able to answer your question.

Hello, loebandco-ga!

Please be mindful that GA researchers only get 75% of the question
price. I had actually spent an hour or so on your question before it
was answered, and although I came up with several names (different
from those mentioned in the answer) I found that the broadness of the
term "expert" combined with the price of the question, the time it
would take to "narrow down the playing field" and the additional
verification of contact information would take considerable time.

Researchers often go through numerous references to ferret out one
that is "good". If you look at the additional suggestions for
searching in your last clarification, you can see that even
researching these entities alone for an "expert" will take
considerable time.

You might consider upping the price, or opening a second question
seeking futher information. Just my suggestion, however.

 Here are a few suggestions:

Dear Marta,

I am able to further the research for you, after all.
You already have some sources on your mind, so if you could mention
them to me, perhaps this would enhance our search.

I WOULD consider Anne Crittenden an expert, as she is an award-winning
journalist and author of 'The Price of Motherhood: Why the Most
Important Job in the World is Still the Least Valued'. She has
reported on the economy and other issues for The New York Times,
Fortune, and CBS News and served as the Executive Director of the Fund
for Investigative Journalism in Washington, D.C and a visiting
professor at MIT and Yale. Her previous books include 'Sanctuary: A
Story of American Conscience' and 'the Law in Collision' and 'Killing
the Sacred Cows: Bold Ideas for a New Economy'. She is a founding
member of a new organization, MOTHERS,
www.mothersoughttohaveequalrights.org dedicated to promoting the
economic, social and political worth and importance of family, child,
and dependent care. Ms. Crittenden has a BA from Southern Methodist
University, a masters degree from Columbia University School of
International Affairs, and an “all-but-dissertation” in modern
European history from Columbia.

Dr. Sandra Steingraber

Heralded for her "inspiring and poetic use of science to elucidate the
causes of cancer," Dr. Steingraber is the author of 'Living
Downstream'. Addressing cancer as a human rights issue, she used
scientific data and personal stories to discuss the role of pollutants
in the nation's rising cancer rates.

Sandra Steingraber, Ph.D., ecologist, author, and cancer survivor, is
an internationally recognized expert on the environmental links to
cancer. She received her doctorate in biology from the University of
Michigan and master's degree in English from Illinois State
University. She was appointed to serve on President Clinton's National
Action Plan on Breast Cancer administered by the U.S. Department of
Health and Human Services.

In 1999, as part of international treaty negotiations, she briefed
U.N. delegates in Geneva, Switzerland on dioxin contamination in
breast milk. She received her doctorate in biology from the University
of Michigan and master’s degree in English from Illinois State
University.

Steingraber’s new work, 'Having Faith: An Ecologist’s Journey to
Motherhood', explores the intimate ecology of motherhood. Both a
memoir of her own pregnancy and an investigation of fetal toxicology,
Having Faith reveals the alarming extent to which environmental
hazards now threaten each crucial stage of infant development. In the
eyes of an ecologist, the mother’s body is the first environment for
human life. The Library Journal selected 'Having Faith' as one of its
best books of 2001.

An enthusiastic and sought-after public speaker, Steingraber has
keynoted conferences on human health and the environment throughout
the United States and Canada and has been invited to lecture at many
universities, medical schools, and teaching hospitals—including
Harvard, Yale, Cornell, and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.
She is recognized for her ability to serve as a two-way translator
between scientists and activists. In 1999, as part of international
treaty negotiations, she briefed U.N. delegates in Geneva, Switzerland
on dioxin contamination of breast milk. Interviews with Steingraber
have appeared in The Chicago Tribune, USA Today, The Cleveland Plain
Dealer, on National Public Radio and The Today Show.
