I have been having no luck migrating my files from a windows 2000
server to a new windows 2003 server.

I am not worried about configuration issues; I am just having problems
copying folders of data and apps from one server to the other.

The first few folders went super easy, but now the remaining ones
won’t copy over.

A - Won’t copy
I’ll connect the destination server to the source server via SMB and
try to copy a folder over. 2 things happen, both of which are bad.

1 – Some folders appear to copy over fine, but when I do a properties
on the source and destination folders the destination (the copy) has
150-500 fewer files and uses 50-900 megs less.

2 – Other folders won’t copy at all. Right after you begin the drag
and drop to start the copy, it says “Calculating the time required to
copy the files, then immediately says “Error Copying file or Folder:
Cannot copy file”

Even if I zip them into a zip file, copy the zip file over, and then
start extracting the file. It begins extracting, and then gets to a
point where it says “Error Copying file or Folder: The system cannot
find the file specified”.

B. The # of files won’t match (before a copy)
A second thing that is weird about this is the discrepancy of the
amount of files in a folder when looked at on one server vs. the
other.

Here is a breakdown of one such folder:
When I go to the original server and I do a Properties on the folder I
get
211,563,001 bytes (217mb)
2238 files

When I walk over to the destination server and access the source
server (over SMB), and then do a properties on it, I get.
217,998,782 bytes (207mb)
2354 files

What would account for this discrepancy?

C – Let’s try the other way

When I go to the destination server and try to push the folder it
immediately says: Error Copying file or Folder: Cannot copy file:
file system error (1148)

These files have always been clean and openable, how could they have
gotten corrupt. I have run Scandisk, but it finds nothing wrong.

There have been Macs that have used these servers. Could they have
left behind some kind of invisible uncopyable files. Is there some
utility that can purify these folders again. Get rid of uncopyable
files.

This is really screwing up my migration and causing me a lot of grief.
 Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance...

Hi Sherpaj,

Have you tried burning to CD and using "sneakernet" to get them to the
new server?

My only thought is a number of files limtitation. You wouldn't be
trying to put these into the root directory, would you? There is a 640
file limitation there.

I'll see if I can think of anything else for you.

sherpaj...

First, I assume you are logged into both systems as Administrator,
so that you have full permissions to copy files. Second, I assume
that none of the files you are copying are encrypted, which will
prevent them from being copied without being decrypted by the
owner(s).

Aside from that, I found only one Microsoft KB article which
seems potentially relevant.

It notes the following problem:

"The Windows 2000 NTFS version 5.0 file system supports reparse
points that can be used to extend the capabilities of the file
systems. When a reparse point is added to a file or folder, an
NTFS $Symbolic_Link attribute contains a unique TAG value. This
unique TAG value is associated with an application or filter
driver. When an application requests that a file be opened,
NTFS passes the I/O request to the correct filter driver
responsible for that specific TAG. If the filter driver that
is responsible for opening the file is not installed or running,
 the error message is displayed."

and resolution:

"Before you can determine which filter driver or application
is associated with the file, you need to know what the TAG
value is. No tool currently does this, but the following two
native Windows 2000 services use reparse points: Remote
Storage and Remote Installation Service (RIS). If you
installed either of these services and then later removed
them, or if either of the services is currently stopped,
you need to reinstall or restart the service before you can
gain access to the affected files."

Let me know if this helps!
