What is the exact date (year/month/day) of Herod Antipas' (who had John the Baptist beheaded - Mark 6:14-29) birth and death? I would like sources for this information as well, not just the answer. |

Hi, Justin J I very much doubt if anyone can give you 'exact' dates. Josephus, one of the early sources, was very unreliable (as regards dates) and if he couldn't get a fix all those years ago, I don't see how anyone could do any better today. In those days, folks were very airy fairy about dates and there is one sect (The Johannites) that believes that John was the real Messiah and that Jesus had him bumped off. Good Luck, anyway. |

justinj, There will be no "exact date" of Herod Antipas' birth and death because, even if one was recorded, it would not correspond to the dates on the calendars we use today. For more information on that, please see my comment to this question -- Q: Birthday of Aristotle http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=23902 And these other questions which help to explain the change in calendar systems --- Q: Year of Our Lord http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=47710 Q: History of calendars, time http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=7 And see these questions for further examples of how the change in calendars can cause immense confusion -- http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=search&q=gregorian+calendar&qtype=all&num=10&start=0 -K~ |

Even a date on the Jewish calendar is acceptable, if it is in fact recorded. In the story in Mark there are many remarkable parellels to the story of Esther, and even more parellels if you include extra-biblical literature like Esther Rabbah. If I can know when his birthday is, or when his party was at least (you would assume they were around the same time) that would be very helpful. Thanks for the comments. -Justin |

Hi Justin... if you are still wondering, here's what I have been able to find out: Herod the Great. Born in 62 B.C. King of Judea. Put to death his wife, Mariamne, and two sons. Massacred the children of Bethlehem, and rebuilt the Temple. Died 4 B.C. The death of Herod the Great is important in its relation to the birth of Christ. The length of his reign -- thirty-seven years from the time he was appointed by the Romans, 40 B. C.; or thirty-four from the death of Antigonus, 37 B. C., fixes Herod the Great?s death in the spring of 750 A. U. C., or 4 B. C. Antipas, also known as Herod (the family name), was a son of Herod the Great, after whose death became ruler of Galilee. So if Herod the Great died in 4 BC and he was born in 62 BC, making him 58 at his death, and Antipas was one of the 2 younger sons (the ones that weren't killed by dad) I guessing that in 4 BC he must have been in his 20s. hope this is of some help, rayray |
