Hello cwh61-ga,

How many licensed ophthalmologists are there in the United States?

According to the 2003 American Board of Ophthalmology brochure, there
are 23,662 licensed ophthalmologists in the United States.

According to the Iridex Corporation in Sec Form 10-K, there are
approximately 20,000 ophthalmologists in the United States.

“We are continuing our efforts to broaden our customer base through
the development of new products and new applications for use by
ophthalmologists and dermatologists. We currently estimate that there
are approximately 20,000 ophthalmologists in the United States and
50,000 internationally who are each potential customers. We believe
there are approximately 10,000 dermatologists and approximately 9,000
plastic surgeons in the U.S. who are potential customers.”

According to the article “PRK - Great News for Aircrews” by Frederick
V. Malmstrom, PH.D., and Capt Scott M. Mckim, O.D., there are over
17,000 licensed ophthalmologists in the United States.

“Federal policies understandably prohibit any official Air Force
recommendation of specific ophthalmologists qualified to perform
PRK. However, since there are over 17,000 licensed ophthalmologists in
the United States; pilot candidates will have many choices.”
