Hello 50plus-ga,

I located an excellent report, “Use of SMS in Europe” by Zbigniew
Smoreda and Frank Thomas.

This survey illustrates the uses of the mobile telephone and the
Internet in nine European countries (Germany, Denmark, Spain, France,
the UK, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands and the Czech Republic). In
this research report they compare the adoption and uses of SMS of
mobile phone users in several European countries.

“In general, the average age of SMS users in Europe is 30, compared to
42 for mobile phone owners who do not use SMS . This difference is
consistent throughout Europe. There is no significant gender
difference: young people, whether men or women, use SMS to the same
extent. Education does not make a difference either. Thus, SMS use has
proved to be largely democratic.”

The graph in Figure 1 of this report will provide you with the
information you require.

Figure 1

Title: Proportion of SMS users by age and country

This figure provides information for Norway, Holland, Germany, Italy,
Czech Republic, France, Denmark, UK and Spain. It is divided into the
following age groups:15-24, 25-35, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64and 65+over.

Due to format difficulties, I am not able to copy and post the graph
here, however you may view the graph at this direct link.
