Question ID: 247772
Is there an online photo sharing service for digital photos that has
unlimited storage (unlike yahoo photos, where you are limited to 100
megabytes), and preferably allows me to password protect certain
photos.

Clarification of Question by lukenosek-ga on 22 Aug 2003 16:46 PDT
Additionally, I dont want to be required to pay for printing photos
just to store them, like snapfish.com

And I want the photos to automatically be displayed on a public web
page, so my friends can see them, unlike a simple file sharing service
like xdrive.com

lukenosek-ga...

One good online photo sharing site that was not mentioned is:

http://www.ofoto.com/Welcome.jsp

Its a Kodak company and I have used it exclusively since getting my
digital camera in March. You can add comments to each picture in your
albums. As well, your "guests" can post comments too!!! You will also
receive notification whenever someone you have invited to your album
views it!!!!!!!!! All free except if you want to order prints but even
the price of the prints is relatively inexpensive.

Another site that is similar to Ofoto is:

www.shutterfly.com

The main difference between the two is that (I believe) Ofoto requires
the viewers to create an account (albeit a free one) to view a set of
photos, while Shutterfly does not.

UNLIMITED VOLUME-
Shutterfly allows an unlimited number of photos to be stored for free,
supposedly forever (or as long as you wish): from the site...
"Shutterfly will let you store as many pictures as you wish.
There is no fee to upload or store your pictures.
All pictures, whether uploaded digitally or from our 35mm film
service, will be kept in your account until you delete them yourself."

SHARING -
At shutterfly, you upload photos (free) and then you create a "share"
- which is a subset of the photos you uploaded. If you want it to be
a public share (called an open share), it will give you a web address
that you can then give to whomever you want to see the set of photos.
You are supposed to enter the email addresses of those you wish to
share the photos with, but if you simply enter only your own, then
you'll get an email with the URL, which you can then give to whomever
you wish.

If you want a password-protected share, that's possible too. Here's
what the site says about sharing:

"An open share is one where the album owner has not required a
password in order for recipients to view the share. Anyone with the
appropriate Open Share link (URL) can access the pictures, can order
prints, and can save them into an account.

For increased security, you can create a private share, whereby you
designate that your share recipients have to enter their Shutterfly
password to view the pictures you've shared.

With an open share, only a link (URL) is required to access the
pictures. With a private share, the link is provided, but the
recipients must also sign in to their account (or sign up for an
account if they were not previously Shutterfly members). The owner of
the pictures designates whether the share is open or private when he
or she creates a share."

Of course, they do charge for making prints of the photos, but there's
nothing that compells you to have prints made.

Hope this helps -

try to take a look at

http://www.fotop.net

You can share photos publicly or privately (hidden, password protect) there,
there's also many public area such as random photo, album categories,
countries, etc so that visitors can find your photos.

They offer unlimited storage for only US$13 per year. And you can
always sign up a free trial account to evaluate it.
