equally-owned joint venture called Sony Ericsson Mobile
Communications. The new company was created to capitalize on the
individual mobile phone market share of Sony and Ericsson. Since both
companies had been experiencing a drop in cellular phone sales, it was
agreed that the combined efforts of both companies could realize
potentially larger sales than either company could alone.

 The mobile telecommunications market is an arena of intense
competition. In 2001, Nokia was the undeniable leader in cellular
phone sales with a 30.8 percent market share. Motorola was second at
14.6 percent. Ericsson held the third spot at 10 percent. Sony was
barely a contender.

 The merger between Sony and Ericsson has allowed the new company to
