Question ID: 259869
Czh-ga gets first exclusivity on this request until 6pm PST, because
of his previous excellent work for me. I need the results by tomorrow
noon GMT.

I would like you to search for business information about the launch
and subsequent success of the Johnson & Johnson Acuvue daily contact
lens. This lens was introduced in the USA in 1988 and grew to $250m
sales worldwide by 1992. It was the first daily disposable contact
lens.

(1) When was the lens launched in Europe? Which countries? What
sales did they enjoy in the early 90s and now?
(2) What regulatory barriers had to be overcome in Europe, if any?

I would expect you to search
(1) the Internet
(2) Specialist market research firms who may have this information. Do
pull out the contents of any reports which have to be paid for,
because I may be able to get the reports through my hospital.
(3) Back issues of business journals such as the Harvard Business
Review, Harvard Busines School Publishing, etc. for case studies.

I am a doctor doing some consulting work for a health care company,
and I would like you to give me a head start while I'm asleep in
London!

I expect that this will be about 1-1.5 hours of work. A good answer
will attract a bonus of $30.

Clarification of Question by victorchua-ga on 24 Sep 2003 14:35 PDT
PS. Could you also search for the names of a few European product
managers for Acuvue whom I could phone up for information.

Hello again Victor,

Thank you for asking for me on your newest questions. I’ve started
researching them but I’m not finished with the answers and I will not
be able to work on them any more tonight. So I’m unlocking both
questions so that other Researchers can have a chance to answer you
before your deadline of noon tomorrow.

Hello Victor,

I’m afraid I wasn’t able to finish researching your question. I’m
about to go to bed so I will not be able to meet your noon deadline. I
hope someone else can help in time. If not, I’d be happy to work on it
tomorrow. Let me know if you have some flexibility about the
timeframes for an answer. Thanks.

I am going to work on this myself now and will let you know my own
results and what extra help I need later today.

Czh, I have found some excellent case studies in the Harvard Business
School Publishing web site, so don't look there. There is nothing on
Zantac on that site. Please continue to work on this. Do you think
have results by the end of your day?

Hello Victor,

I'll work on it this morning and should have something for you by the
end of the day.

Hello Victor,

As you expected, there is lots of market research information
available on the contact lens industry. Unfortunately, most of it
comes in very expensive reports. I’ve collected a variety of these
showing an abstract and the table of contents so you can decide which
ones are worth pursuing. You said you might be able to get access to
them without having to pay for them.

I’ve also included some articles that summarize various market
research reports and trends. The conclusion of most of these seems to
be that the contact lens market is very large in the US and Europe is
far behind. This means that there are enormous opportunities if
Europeans can be convinced to switch to contact lenses. Several of the
reports review the market segmentation and the various products aimed
at the targeted consumers.

I wasn’t able to get very hard numbers on the Acuvue launch in Europe.
I was able to confirm that a doctor’s prescription is required to be
able to get contact lenses. Optometrists and ophthalmologists are
concerned about customers wanting to buy their disposable contact
lenses online. This is a bigger issue in the US than in Europe because
in many states the medical practitioner is not required to give a copy
of the contact lens prescription to the customer and is thus able to
hold the customer hostage to buying contacts from the prescribing
professional.

I’ve collected a lot of information for you about Acuvue and the
European contact lens market. I’ve categorized what I’ve found so that
you can more easily make sense of the research as you browse through
it.

I hope you find the research useful and I hope to work with you again
soon.

August 11, 2003 -- Vistakon growth slows

Sales growth is slowing for Vistakon, the Jacksonville-based part of
Johnson & Johnson's Total Vision Care Unit, the result of intensified
competition in the contact lens market.

Vistakon, which once sported double-digit growth rates on the strength
of its popular Acuvue 2 disposable contact lenses, posted sales gains
of 6 percent in the United States and 10 percent worldwide in the
second quarter of 2002.
Nevertheless, Sweig said Vistakon remains a profitable, albeit very
small part, of Johnson and Johnson's overall business.

Opticians continued to dominate retailing in the eyeglasses and
contact lens market, accounting for over 91% of value sales in 2002.

In the UK in 2002 approximately 30 million people were eyewear users,
second only to Germany within Europe. The proportion of people who

CONTACT LENS MARKET -- GENERAL
==============================

http://www.forbes.com/newswire/2003/09/09/rtr1077399.html
Reuters, 09.09.03 -- FTC backs plan to boost contact lens competition
WASHINGTON, Sept 9 (Reuters) - U.S. regulators on Tuesday added their
support to a proposal in Congress designed to loosen optometrists'
grip over the sale of contact lenses.

An official with the Federal Trade Commission told lawmakers the
agency supported a proposal aimed at making it easier for patients to
buy contact lenses from discounters.

Nearly 36 million Americans wear contacts, and the U.S. market for
lenses is estimated to be worth between $1.95 billion and $3.5
billion, according to the FTC.

November 2002
Contact Lens Market: Specialty Lenses and Favorable Demographics Are
Driving Growth Worldwide

Specialty contact lenses continue to be a growth area in the worldwide
contact lens market, which reached $3.8 billion in 2001. About 60% of
those revenues were generated in the U.S. market, but great
opportunities for future growth exist outside the United States.

The lower penetration of contact lens wear elsewhere in the world
represents significant growth opportunities for contact lens
manufacturers.

The predominance of soft lens wear, particularly the rise of
disposable and planned-replacement lenses, which provide an ongoing
revenue stream to manufacturers, means that the contact lens industry
is pretty much defined by soft lens usage.

Overall, Robert Baird & Co. expects revenues in the specialty soft
contact lens market to increase 19% over the next three years compared
with an estimated 4% increase in commodity soft lenses (disposable,
planned-replacement, and conventional) over the same period worldwide.
In the United States, the commodity lens market accounted for about
58% of revenues in 2001 versus 84% outside the United States, and the
specialty lens market accounted for about 42% of sales in the United
States and 16% outside the United States.

Competitive Comparisons
In terms of dollar revenue and market share, Johnson & Johnson is the
world leader in soft contact lenses. Table 3 shows U.S. and non-U.S.
figures for the major players in 2001.

International Market
According to analyst Wong of Robert Baird & Co., trends outside the
United States pretty much mirror those in the U.S. domestic market.
Market penetration, however, is key. Of those who need vision
correction, Wong says, 20% in the United States wear contact lenses,
compared with 12.5% in Japan and only 8.3% in Europe. Increased
penetration of contact lens wear is expected in these markets over the
next few years.

This report analyzes the world markets for rigid gas permeable (RGP),
soft contact lenses, and other lens care products. Because each
regional market is unique, this report also examines the distinct
attributes of markets in North America, Europe, Asia, and the rest of
the world. With such a comprehensive overview of the field, users of
this report will be poised for market success.

Effective Distribution Will Define Market Winners
"Choosing the correct distribution channel constitutes one of the
major marketing challenges for contact lens and solution companies,"
write the authors of this report. The regulatory environments and
characteristics of regional markets will determine which strategies
will work best. In North America, for example, Internet distribution
has huge potential. However, current European and Asian regulations
for Internet purchasing are restraining this channel.

Victor,

I did some more searching to try to find some additional information
about Vistakon’s marketing strategy for Acuvue and to try to identify
some product managers. I’m including links to some articles that name
specific individuals in the organization as well as the headquarters
address and phone number.

I hope this additional information will be helpful. I’m also sending
you some information about the USA class action suit that might be of
interest to see how Vistakon is handling dealing with discount
vendors. I’ll get on the Zantac question tomorrow.

Scenario—
Vistakon, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, wanted to protect and
expand its dominant market share in the growing contact lens industry
by expanding their sales force. Vistakon's management asked TerrAlign
to assist them in identifying locations for new sales territories and
in designing balanced territories that would help block competitive
efforts.

Challenge—
Since management had made a strategic decision to change the basis for
designing territories, every geographic area needed scrutiny. Rather
than trying to assign all 40,000 zip codes and tens of thousands of
customers manually, Vistakon turned to TerrAlign for a quicker and
more accurate method. TerrAlign's task was to distribute the work of
calling on existing customers and prospecting for new customers evenly
among Vistakon's salespeople by using market potential and sales
information to design territories better suited for today's market.

Until 1999, it was common for those who wore disposable contact lenses
to visit their optician to collect supplies of lenses. Opticians, in
turn, had to stock and administer an ever-increasing range of contact
lenses in their outlets where time and space are at a premium. Johnson
& Johnson Vision Care changed all that by launching its Streamline
Express service, which offers patients the option, under the control
of the eye care professional, of direct delivery of their ACUVUE®

An Interview with Phil Keefer
March 2003
Walt Mayo, OD

The following interview was conducted in mid-March, 2003. The words
in bold print and preceded by WM are those of Walt Mayo, OD. Phil
Keefer’s words are in normal print and preceded by PK.

WM: Welcome, Phil. Optometrists around the country recently received
Vistakon’s letter regarding your company’s agreement with
1-800-Contacts. The letter, intended to clear up any confusion, seems
to have done just the opposite for many. In conducting this
interview, I wanted more detail about the agreement, how it came
about, and how you feel it will be an advantage for optometrists
compared to your company’s past policies.
victorchua-ga rated this answer:5 out of 5 stars and gave an additional tip of: $30.00
An excellent answer again, well worth the maximum bonus of $30
