In 1969 an Aero Commander 680E, apparently supplied by the Litton Corporation to a South African company Map Studio Productions, involved in geophysical survey, crashed into a mountain near Dirkiesdorp, Eastern Transvaal. Although 3 people: Canadians Jim Neels and Dave Banks the pilot and Ed Church a South african co-pilot died, there is no accident report on record at the SACAA and the only reference to ZS-MSP is that it was exported to Zambia on 2 July 1970. Can you throw any light on what happened here? |

After a lot of dead ends on this question, I just heard back from a contact in Africa who has located the actual incident file for this crash, and can send you a copy. If you would like the details of her contact information, please open a new question here at GA (your current question has expired, I'm afraid), so I can post the information as an answer. Thanks. pafalafa-ga |

Thank you for your comment. I thought that no one was interested in this question. However a few hours before I received your comment someone in South Africa made contact with me and gave us some people who might be able to help as well as another registration for the aircraft. If nothing comes of this I will open another question. |

Hello again Marelena, Oh...we're interested in all your questions, all right, it's just that some are tougher than others. I received the following document today: REPORT OF THE ACCIDENT INQUIRY BOARD APPOINTED BY THE MINISTER OF TRANSPORT TO MAKE AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE CAUSE OF AND RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE AIRCRAFT ACCIDENT WHICH OCCURRED NEAR DIRKIESDORP, DISTRICT PIET RETIEF, TRANSVAAL, IN WHICH AIRCRAFT ZS-ULZ WAS DESTROYED AND THREE PERSONS WERE KILLED. The report begins: At about 1300 GMT on 6 August 1969, twin-engined Aero Commander aircraft ZS-ULZ, operated by Messrs. Map Studio Productions (Pty.) Ltd., Johannesburg, struck the upper reaches of a high mountain on the farm Groothoek, near Dirkiesdorp, district Piet Retief, Transvaal. It was completely destroyed on impact and subsequent fire. ============= If you're interested in the full report, you can always repost your question, and I'll be happy to provide it. Good luck in your work. pafalafa-ga |

Thanks for your most recent comments...too bad the actual accident report didn't meet your needs. Is there anything you'd like to do in the way of follow-up, at this point...? pafalafa-ga |
