Hello daisy7-ga,

According to the U.S. Department Of Health And Human Services, Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD),
which is more often now referred to as Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity
Disorder (ADHD), is diagnosed more often in White non-Hispanic
children than in Hispanic and black non-Hispanic children. Hispanic
children are diagnosed with ADHD least often.

New CDC Report Looks at Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/releases/02news/attendefic.htm
?According to a new report released today by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 1.6 million elementary
school-aged children have been diagnosed with
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), a condition also
known as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). In a national survey, the
parents of 7 percent of children 6-11 years of age reported ever being
told by a doctor or health professional that their child had ADHD.?

---

?The report details many of the characteristics of children with ADHD,
learning disability, and children with both conditions. Among children
with a diagnosis of only ADHD, boys were nearly three times as likely
as girls to have this diagnosis. White non-Hispanic children were more
than twice as likely as Hispanic and black non-Hispanic children to
report a diagnosis of ADHD.?

Attention Deficit Disorder and Learning Disability: United States, 1997-98.
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/series/sr_10/sr10_206.pdf
?White non-Hispanic children were more often diagnosed with ADD/noLD
than black non-Hispanic or Hispanic children. Racial and ethnic
differences in the percent of all children with LD (LD/noADD and BOTH)
were not statistically significant.?

According to Child Trends Databank:

?In 2001, 7.4 percent of non-Hispanic white children and 5.7 percent
of non-Hispanic black children had been diagnosed with ADHD compared
to only 3.5 percent of Hispanic children. (See Table 1)?

?"Hispanics have a 30% lower prevalence of clinical ADHD symptoms than
do African Americans or Caucasians," said principal investigator
Steven P. Cuffe, Director, Division of Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry, W. S. Hall Psychiatric Institute, Columbia, South
Carolina. "Even when we adjust for other variables, this ethnic
background seems to be protective."?

---

?As is consistent with previous research, the investigators found that
ADHD symptoms were present in 4.19% of boys and 1.77% of girls. Among
the boys, the rate of ADHD by race was 3.06% for Hispanic descent,
4.33% for whites, and 5.65% for boys of African descent. They found
statistically significant differences by gender, among boys by race,
and by age, with the incidence increasing with age (P<0.01 for all).
There was also a difference by income, so that there was a higher risk
of ADHD among lower-income boys (P<0.02).?
