I got a speeding ticket in February while I was driving a rental in
Jersey.  I got four points on my New Jersey licence.  Since I moved to
NY City a couple of months ago, I was wondering if I get a NY drivers
licence, will the points get transferred?  I'm looking to buy a car,
and because of this ticket, the insurance would triple.  I had a clean
record up until I got pulled over.  Thanks for your help.

	Good question. Good news, bad news answer.

Bad news: (not really bad) : First of all, according to the New York
State Department of Motor Vehicles, you need to get your New York
license within 30 days of moving.

Good news, Quoted from NYSDMV website:

“Out-of-State Violations. DMV does not record out-of-state violations
committed by NYS drivers in other jurisdictions, except for
out-of-state alcohol or drug-related violations (e.g. DUI) and moving
violations committed in Quebec and Ontario. Therefore, except for
violations in Ontario and Quebec, points are not added to your NYS
record for out-of-state violations.”
This is where I found it.

Thanks, but i'm not sure if this really tells me much.  I understand
this applies to the drivers who are currently licenced in NY, but I
still don't know if the points that I got while driving in Jersey with
Jersey licence will transfer when applying for NY licence.  What I'm
wondering about is if the insurance company will be able to see the
violation by looking at the DMV history or whatever else they use.

	I called the New York State Insurance Department @ 212-480-6400. I am
still waiting for a call back.

	However, I called Allstate and State Farm; both said they access the
previous states DMV to check for any violations. Unfortunately, the
points will follow you.

	Have you taken the driver improvement course? Most states offer this
a way of removing (one time) points from your record.

Hi,  Just wanted to follow up.

New York State Insurance Department just called me back, and they
verified that all northern states have a "reciprocity agreement"
between states. This means they do ask for previous addresses, and
share violation data with each other.
