I would love to be able to buy eggnog all year round, but it's
perishable, and apparently most merchants find that sales are not good
enough after the holiday season to make it economically feasible to
offer it. Here's a sensible answer from a dairy:

"Why not make Eggnog year-round?

Experience has shown us that Eggnog sales drop off to nearly nothing
immediately after the New Year holiday. The bright side is that
ultra-pasteurization allows us to put a 90-120 day code on our product
without loss of flavor or quality. This allows retailers to order
ahead and carry the product well into the new year if they so choose,
and if inventories allow."

"Ask Yahoo" evades the question, but provides a history of eggnog:

I have tried canned eggnog, which can be purchased year-round at some
stores. It isn't bad, but it resembles fresh eggnog in the same way
that canned milk resembles fresh milk. In my area of the US, a canned
eggnog is available under the Borden brand:

making your own:
