I found a list of more than 100 "US" companies using Six Sigma and
also a benchmark survey indicating (among other things) distribution
among company sizes and industries if these are of interest to you as
an answer?

Hello,

There are some fairly detailed and recent surveys published about Six
Sigma usage in companies both large and small, but they are not (as
far as I have seen) broken out geographically.

Although most of the companies surveyed apear to be US-based, I cannot
in fairness claim that the surveys reflect only North American
practices.

Are you interested in having your question answered with results that
are not specific to North America?

The geoographic distribution is not as important as the level of
confidence that the listing is an accurate reflection of the number of
companies, not just a sampling. I need to know the best estimate of
the total number of six sigma users and the related industries.
Company names would be the gold standard.

Hello cpath-ga,

It?s very interesting that finding comprehensive lists of companies
that have implemented Six Sigma is extremely difficult considering
that there are lots of trade press and business articles, books, white
papers and training programs about what it is and how to implement it.
There are also numerous consultants to help a company plan and
implement Six Sigma.

My search led to a recent survey that reports on the current status of
Six Sigma implementation. The report below will lead you to several
tables that will help you get a good idea of what industries and what
types of companies are using this quality improvement technique.
Because of the complexity of the process, Six Sigma is mainly a large
company phenomenon. In addition, it?s very interesting that the survey
shows that there is a ?drastic drop in the percentage of companies
using Six Sigma after the second or third year.?

In addition to this survey snapshot of who is using Six Sigma, I have
also found some sources for identifying specific companies. I compiled
a master list based on the various sources but I?m unable to evaluate
how accurate this list will be since the sources for Six Sigma users
were not cited in the source documents I?ve used. Since mostly large
companies implement Six Sigma, it is difficult to identify what
organization or operating unit within a company is using it. It is
also possible that some of the companies on the list used Six Sigma in
the past but have discontinued it as shown by the survey I?ve cited.
You may have to conduct current research on specific companies to be
able to confirm that they are (or have been) Six Sigma users.

I hope that the information I?ve compiled meets your needs. Please
don?t hesitate to ask for clarification before you rate my answer.

I wish you well for your project.

Six Sigma Survey: Breaking Through the Six Sigma Hype

http://www.qualitydigest.com/feb03/articles/01_article.shtml
Six Sigma Survey ? Big success ? but what about the other 98 percent?

Our second annual Six Sigma Survey takes a snapshot of who's using Six
Sigma and, with the help of some notable Six Sigma experts, focuses on
the state of Six Sigma and where it could be headed.

The majority of the survey results can be seen in the tables
throughout this article. Rather than explain all the results in
detail, we'll leave it to you to look at the tables while we focus on
what we believe are two of the most interesting findings: the lack of
small companies pursuing Six Sigma and why those who are using Six
Sigma seem to stop after three or four years.

Despite plenty of press, anecdotes and even surveys showing huge Six
Sigma successes, fewer than one-quarter (22%) of all companies we
surveyed have a Six Sigma program in place.

According to 1997 U.S. Census Bureau statistics, 98 percent of U.S.
firms had fewer than 20 employees, and 82 percent grossed less than $1
million in sales in 1992. More than 30 percent of all sales or
receipts for U.S. companies come from companies with fewer than 100
employees.

Our 2001 and 2002 surveys and the DynCorp survey show a drastic drop
in the percentage of companies using Six Sigma after the second or
third year, as shown above.

Current Compiled List Of 115 6-Sigma Companies

***** I?ve been able to find the source for this list. It comes from
Redfern Services. See page six. The document seems to be fairly dated
as some of the companies on the list have either merged or gone out of
business. There is also no indication as to the source of the
information for putting these companies on the list as Six Sigma
users. Some of the comments in the discussion thread update and
contradict the list.
