Hello,

I'm looking for any freeware/commercial software that will allow me to
lookup the physical location of each of the IPs in a small list (based
on WHOIS or any other method). I would like the software to be
automated (thus not me doing the lookups one by one) and have it
present the estimate of the location of the IP including "City,
State/County, Country". Please no special webserver modules nor
scripts, just a simple software that can do this.

Provide a listing of one or more titles, descriptions + links (if available).

Thank you.

Hi there,

Typically the only type of information you can immediately retrieve
based on an IP is the owner (an ISP) and the location of that ISP's
servers. Since many IP addresses may not even have a single "home" the
only thing you can do from this point is contact the ISP for furhter
information - unless a crime is committed using an IP they are
unlikely to give you any further information to protect the privacy of
their subscribers.

Perhaps you would like to rephrase the question with this information in mind :)

Hello there,

Please have a look at the geographic software products at this site:

http://www.geobytes.com/

They offer a suite of products that would seem to meet your needs. If
these look promising, I can point out one or two additional companies
with similar software products.

I am not aware of any freeware with this capability, however.

Let me know what you think.

Hello,

Is there a software (commercial OR freeware, it doesnt have to be
freeware) thats a little bit easier to use than Geo's products? It
seems to me that they are development related, while I just want a
standalone app that will process the list of my ips (which are infact
from logs).

Thanks

Hello again,

I guess an answer to this question depends alot on what you're trying
to accomplish, and how many addresses you want to look up.

There is a free 20-address per day lookup service at:

http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp

You can enter a list of up to 20 URLs, and get geographic information
in return. For larger lists, you can open up an account at the site.

Have a look at that, and let me know if it would meet your needs.

If it doesn't, perhaps you can desribe in a bit more detail the output
you are looking for, the number and types of inputs to the system, and
the degree of automation you are seeking.

Thanks.

That is exactly what I needed!

But is there a standalone software that can do this ? That site does
specifically what I need, but I would prefer a local version, and a
software instead of a website.

It converted :

80.110.83.41
80.110.83.41
80.109.141.98
80.109.130.199

to :

80.110.83.41	AT	AUSTRIA WIEN	VIENNA	CHELLO AUSTRIA
80.110.83.41	AT	AUSTRIA WIEN	VIENNA	CHELLO AUSTRIA
80.109.141.98	AT	AUSTRIA TIROL	INNSBRUCK	CHELLO AUSTRIA
80.109.130.199	AT	AUSTRIA TIROL	INNSBRUCK	CHELLO AUSTRIA

Just what I wanted, but a software that can do this is much more preferred.

If there's nothing else, then submit your Request for Clarification as
the answer so you can get your money.

Thanks

Hello again,

Glad to hear that the ip2location service does what you need. There
are some other options that may also serve your purposes, including
one that can run as a stand-alone program on your PC. I've listed
these below.

If, after looking these over, you have any questions about the
products or services, just let me know by posting a Request for
Clarification, and I'll be happy to assist you further.

Have a happy and prosperous new year.

==========

The Geolyzer from Geobytes may be just the thing you're looking for:

http://www.geobytes.com/Solutions.htm#GeoLyzer

"GeoLyzer is a small windows application that inserts geographic
content into a server log file. GeoLyzer can process any delimited
data file that includes an IP or host address column. GeoLyzer
utilizes the GeoSelect architecture to provide fast log file
resolutions. (Note: GeoLyzer comes standard as a part of
GeoSelect)...GeoLyzer comes with supplied geographic template files
and you can choose which template you use. You can also add your own
template or modify an existing one."

I should say that I'm particularly fond of the Geobytes results. When
I'm looking for geographic information on an IP address, I've found
that Geobytes tends to give some of the most consistently reliable
results.

==========

The two options provided by my good colleague, Bobbie7 (thanks,
Bobbie), appear to be internet lookup services (i.e. you need an
active internet connection for the service to work). I'm not familiar
enough with these to offer any insight into their utility, but you may
want to check them out as well:

WhereIsIP Full Version
http://www.jufsoft.com/whereisip/

HotWhois
http://www.tialsoft.com/hwhois/

==========

And lastly, there is ip2location itself, which is an online service
rather than software (though they provide software products as well!),
but you may find it a simple way to meet your needs just the same:

http://www.ip2location.com/free.asp

==========

Again, just let me know if you need any additional information for any
of these products or services.

Hello,

Thank you for the information.

I choose to use : ip2location for the moment. It fits my needs more
than using the other software titles that are based on a manual lookup
of each of the ips. Most likely I'll sign up for the
http://www.ip2location.com/ paid service.

Thank you once more, you did a terrific job on finding the site that I
needed the most out of all the rest.

Happy Holidays

For location lookup, I use jwhois(A whois client).
For large mount of IPs, I will create a shell script(It's quite easy).
In my Windows environment, I use cygwin(A Linux-like environment for
Windows. Only bash.exe and cygwin.dll are needed.) to run my shell
script.

For some version of cygwin, it's bash.exe and cygwin1.dll

jmswilsn-ga,

Thanks a lot for the kind words and the generous rating and tip. Much
appreciated (especially since I still have holiday shopping left to
do!).

All the best.
