How do you reseat a hard drive on a HP Pavilion laptop? It won't
recognize the HDD on boot up, so I need to open it up and make sure it
is still seated properly. I've tried removing all the screws, but it
still won't separate enough to allow access to the HDD.

Laptop is HP Pavilion F3925; or at least that the model # on the
recovery CD's. The model# on the serial tag is F3929H

Unfortunately, I do not have access to a similar laptop to give you
specific instructions, nor was I able to find an online copy of a
field service manual for the XH555 laptop. So, I'll base this
clarification request on the information I was able to find in the
online version of the user manual.

With the un-powered laptop upside-down, front-edge towards you, you
should see the battery in the lower left corner, the RAM module cover
to the upper left, the mini-PCI cover to the lower right, and the hard
drive cover to the upper right. Inspect this last cover; besides any
screws that may be used to retain it, you may observe what appears to
be a fingernail-edge on the surface of the cover to allow you to push
the cover towards the right. You should be able to find a way to
remove this cover, to reveal the HDD inside.

Please note, though, that the HDD itself will most likely be retained
with additional screws to prevent it from pulling loose on its own.
Almost every time I have ever seen a laptop BIOS report that the HDD
is not recognized, it's because the drive has failed.

Please see if you can remove the cover with the information I have
provided, and advise if you need any further assistance before I post
this as an Answer.

I was able to access the HDD by removing the LCD bracket covers, then
unscrewing the hinges and popping off the cover that contains the
power, email, standby, and www buttons. That gave me access to the
screws that secure the keyboard. after removing the keyboard, I was
able to reseat the HDD which turned out to be bad afterall. Thanks
for your help.

I'm happy for you that you were able to get to the 'heart' of the
problem, and I'm sorry that I was not able to help you get there
faster.

The various laptop manufacturers vary greatly in the amount of
information available online. For example, IBM has field service
manuals available online for many of their laptops, to aid technicians
in replacing failed or failing parts easily. Most manufacturers make
some attempt at making the hard drive accessible, as it is a part that
a significant number of customers will either want, or need, to
replace during the life of the computer.
