Question ID: 298190
My question concerns the Republic of San Marino. (San Marino is the
3rd smallest nation in Europe, and is located in Central Italy, where
it is both landlocked and surrounded by Italy.)
There are two (2) armed forces branches that both protect and police
the nation. They are the:
(1) Voluntary Military Force (Corpi Militari Voluntar)
(2) Gendarmerie
Technically they may not be armed forces as some people may define it,
but both serve that function nevertheless.
Now, here is the information I am seeking.:
****I would like to know what the current Insignia of Rank looks like
for both the (1) Voluntary Military Force (Corpi Militari Voluntar),
and (2) the Gendarmerie.****
(For those who may not know what Insignia of Rank is, please go to..............
http://www.rankinsignia.info ).
Insignia of Rank is kind of a shorthand, consisting of various types of symbols
of various shapes and colors, which can tell you at a glance of what a
person's rank is. These symbols can take different shapes and colors,
such as chevrons,stars,bars,stripes,etc.
I would like my answer in the form of either color illustrations, or
descriptions, such as...(1) Private-(No Insignia);(2)Corporal-2 Gold
chevrons,point-up, mid-sleeve on both arms;(3)Lieutenant-1
five-pointed gold star, worn on either a shoulder strap or on the
lapels. (If you wish to do the color illustrations...well, one picture
is worth a thousand words.)
I'm looking forward very much to obtaining this information, and I
hope to hear from you soon! (I'm available for clarification). Thank
you.

Dear kitemaker - thanks for submitting your very interesting question
to our forum. I wanted to check with you whether you had looked at
the following book:

The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Military Insignia of the 20th Century:
A Comprehensive A-Z Guide to the Badges, Patches and Embellishments of
the World's Armed Forces
by Guido Rosignoli
Publisher: Arrow (A Division of Random House Group)

I can make arrangements to access this book and retrieve the relevant
images, but i was thinking that you may have already looked at it -
and that San Marino may not have been represented...

thanks,
ragingacademic

Dear ragingacademic,
Kitemaker here!!

Thank you for researching the answer to my question.

I think I may have consulted that book many years ago, but I don't
recall seeing anything about San Marino. I'd definitely be interested
though, if there is any rank insignia information that I can utilise.

Recently I found a website called "La Polizia Di San Marino" (The
Police of San Marino) and it looked at first that I may have hit the
jackpot. It's URL is:
http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/poliziatia/polizie_straniere/san_mari/sanmari_iniz.html
It had three different sections to it, (1) Gendarmeria (Gendarmerie);
(2) Polize Civile (Polizia e Anticendio-Police & Fire); and (3)Guardia
di Rocca (Esercito e Polizia Militare-Army & Military Police). {It
didn't list the Voluntary Military Force (Corpi Militari Voluntar),
but maybe there's evidence that would show it's similar to all the
other branches.)
Each section had listed the category "Gradi-Ranks", and I thought a
significant gap in my information was going to be filled! That was
when I found out that I couldn't even seem to access the website.
(Talk about "so close and yet so far"!!)
That wouldn't have answered my questions completely anyway, but it
would have given me some information to go on.
So, all in all, it has shown me that the information I'm seeking is
definitely "out there", and this isn't just a wild goose chase.
Believe me ragingacademic, your efforts are greatly appreciated, and
I'm excited about the information that this search could reveal!
Thank you!
Sincerely,
Kitemaker

kitemaker - hello. No bullseye but some news thus far...

1) I located a copy of "Illustrated Encyclopedia of Military Insignia"
at San Diego State, called the reference librarian, he pulled the book
- and no San Marino... He said it was only about 200+ pages and only
major countries were represented.

2) The page you are looking for is here:

http://members.xoom.virgilio.it/poliziaita/polizie_straniere/san_mari/sanmari_iniz.html

I came across it last night and wrote the owner:

I have found online photographs of two of their forces. I do not know
which is which and the sites does not distinguish one from another.
The color photos depict both forces in full parade regalia. The
pictures seem to have been taken from approximately 30 feet and 60
feet distances respectively and while they are not detailed enough to
see the ranks (which appear to be indicated perhaps by braids, sashes
and sleeve piping), I must say the uniforms are absolutely beautiful.
Would you like these as an answer?

I have since found a fair description of each military/police unit's
uniforms and in some instances various accoutrements that are unique
to officers as opposed to enlisted men. These are not rank specific in
that that don't specifically mention private, corporal, sergeant, etc,
but they provide a nice description of each military unit's uniform
wear.

Please let me know if you are interested in these as an answer along
with the photos I have found.

One photo I have found has been identified. It is most certainly the
Guardia di Rocca. The other, I believe is the Uniformed Militia (La
Milizia). I now also know how many of each rank are designed to per
unit (they all differ) - for example: 13 privates, 6 NCO's, 2
Captains, 1 Major, etc.

Hi tutuzdad!
Kitemaker here!!

It seems like we're getting closer to the answer bit by bit! I think
that the photographs will prove very useful in conjunction with the
information that I'm seeking.
The information that I'm looking for is basically..........I want to
know what the current Insignia of Rank looks like (for each rank) in
all branches of the Republic of San Marino's armed forces and police.
I'd like the answer to be in the form of either illustrations of all
their rank insignia, or clear descriptions of what they look like
(colour,shape,number,position,etc.) and unambiguous.
An illustration (or picture) is worth a thousand words.
Should a written description be the way to convey the information, I'd
like it look something like
this:............................................................
GENDARMERIE:
ENLISTED:
(1) Private (No Insignia)
(2) Corporal (Two-2 gold chevrons,point up,worn mid-sleeve on both arms)
OFFICER:
(1) Lieutenant (One-1 small, 5-pointed gold star, worn on either
shoulder straps or on the lapels)
(2) Captain (Three-3, small 5-pointed gold stars worn on either
shoulder straps or lapels)

As I said, the above is just an example.

In short, I'd just like to know what their rank insignia looks like,
for each of their service branches.
Again, if you require a further reference, please go to:
http://www.rankinsignia.info
Thank you.

I believe I have done all I can do with regard to your question. Let
me summarize what I now have:

I now have seven (7) color photos of the various forces of San Marino.

I have a vivid description of the make-up of each force's units in
terms of how many of each rank are delegated to each force.

I have a vivid decription of each forces' uniforms which includes one
mention regarding what officers wear as opposed to what enlisted men
wear. Unfortunatley I was not able to located a rank table like the
one you asked for, so if you'd like to reduce your price however you
see fit to accept what I have I will concur with that decision.

If you'd like me to post this information as an answer I'd be delighted.

Here is an example of one of the kind of photos I was able to find.
Note the distinct gold shoulder epaulettes, gold braid and white
sashes on the leaders versus the red and white shoulder epaulettes,
red and white braids and lack of a sash on the following formation of
soldiers.

In addition, I have a description of not one, but SEVEN DIFFERENT
military forces of San Marino and the rank allocation
(chain-of-command) within six of them. Finding the rank table for even
one of them has proven difficult but this decription of seven
different units may give you new direction in your search.

These (and others) are the kind of things I was referring to when I
suggested the option of reducing your offered price to accept what I
"was" able to find. If you'd rather not, just let me know and I will
release the question for someone else to research.

PS: I also have direct contact information (name, telephone and postal
address) for each of the units I found. If these are of interest to
you I can indclude them in my answer.

In your last clarification response you referred to the photos I have
found thus far and said:

"I think that the photographs will prove very useful in conjunction with the
information that I'm seeking."

Have you decided if you'd like me to post my research as an answer
even though I don't actually have the rank structure, or decided if
you'd like to reduce the price in order to accept what I have in leiu
of the actual information you had originally hoped to recieve?

Awaiting your response.

Hi tutuzdad!
Kitemaker here!!

In the past two days I was quite surprised as two other people have
contacted me, with what they say are pictures of men in San Marino
uniform, one set with the San Marino Guardia di Rocca, and in the
other set, the person says she has pictures of Gendarmerie uniforms,
though from the way they both describe their respective pictures, only
part of the insignia is clearly visible.

As what I'm looking for strictly speaking is information on San
Marino's Insignia of Rank, I think that once I get the information I'm
looking for, THEN I'd like to purchase the information you'd
researched. EVERYTHING hinges upon my getting the rank insignia
information I want, and once I do, then we can do business. See ya'!
Sincerely,
Kitemaker

As a point of interest, I thought you might like to know that I have
also found the following rank hierarchy from lowest to highest rank of
the San Marino Military as set forth in:

Regolamento Organico e Disciplina dei Corpi Militari
Legge 26 gennaio 1990 n.15 (pubblicata in data 14 febbraio 1990)
http://www.esteri.sm/LeggeCorpiMil.htm

?ENLISTED AND NON-COMMISSIONED?
SOLDIER (PRIVATE)
CAPORALE (CORPORAL)
CAPORALE MAGGIORE (CORPORAL MAJOR)
SERGENTE (SERGEANT)
SERGENTE MAGGIORE (SERGEANT MAJOR)

?OFFICIAL SUBORDINATE OFFICERS?
SOTTOTENENTE (SUB LIEUTENANT)
TENENTE (LIEUTENANT)
CAPITANO (CAPTAIN)

?SUPERIOR OFFICERS?
MAGGIORE (MAJOR)
TENENTE COLONNELLO (LIEUTENANT COLONEL)
COLONNELLO (COLONEL)
GENERALE (GENERAL)

Just thought you might like to know these in case they aid you in your
efforts. Submit a post here asking for me if you hit a dead end and
decide to pursue what I have found at some point in the future.

Good luck.

kitemaker - my apologies, I did not mean to disappear but as long as
another researcher is working on a question I cannot access it. This
prevents us from doing a lot of "double work..."

It appears that my colleague tutuzdad-ga has found quite a lot of
information but not what you are seeking.

In the meantime, I had written both the gendarmeria as well as the
polizia civile; unfortunately, the latter bounced back today...still
waiting to see if I hear from the gendermeria and seeking an
alternative email address for the polizia. I will continue to keep
you updated, and my italian keeps improving... :-)

thanks,
ragingacademic
