"At the cutting edge of medical advancements, NHC is involved in a
wide range of cardiovascular research projects and clinical trials, to
improve diagnostic and therapeutic modalities of our patients.
Research interests at NHC broadly focus on cell and molecular studies
to evaluate and understand the genetic variations, risk factors, and
role of vascular endothelial cells in cardiovascular diseases. These
studies aim to identify the specific markers for coronary heart
disease as well as to help develop novel therapeutic targets and
strategies to improve outcomes."

** "We have embarked on stem-cell research, to explore and determine
the potential of differentiating and transforming human stem cells
into specific cardiomyocytes for the myocardial repair and growth of
cardiac tissue in heart-failure patients. Clinical trials are also
being performed comparing novel investigative or treatment
alternatives with the current standard diagnostic tests and
therapies."

"Biopolis, the $500 million research hub that Singapore hopes will be
a crucible for cutting-edge science and innovation, was launched on 29
October. The state-of-the-art complex in Buona Vista will be the
epicentre of biomedical research. The launch was timed to coincide
with Singapore's first international stem cell conference and a
meeting of the country's Biomedical Sciences International Advisory
Council. Nobel laureate Sydney Brenner, the molecular geneticist who
has helped shape Singapore's biomedical landscape since the 1980s,
delivered the inaugural lecture. Dr Brenner said that Singapore's
dedication and leadership had impressed him over the years. Its
decision-makers spent a lot of time thinking about the Biopolis
project, 'but once the decision to go ahead is given, then it's full
speed ahead'."

In July, 2002, the Singapore government ethics committee recommended
in favor of therapeutic cloning, meaning Singapore may soon become a
stem-cell research hub.
