Hi Margaret,
Below is a brief biography of Clara Barton, the founder of the American Red Cross.
"Clara Barton was born in North Oxford Massachusetts in 1821. Nothing
much is known about the younger years of her life. She began a career
as a teacher. During the Civil War, she was a dedicated nurse. She
risked her life to carry medicine and food to the wounded in the
battles. Soldiers caller her the "Angel of the outfield." Later, she
started the American Red Cross, an organization to help people in
need. She was the first female clerk in the U.S. patent Office. In
1864, she was appointed superintendent of nurses of the Army of the
James. When the war ended, she formed a bureau to search for missing
men. It marked 12,000 graves in the Andersonville National Cemetery in
Georgia. In 1869, she went to Switzerland for a rest from the Red
Cross. In 1873, she returned home. In 1877, prompted by the outbreak
of the war between Russian and Turkey, she started to convince people
of the need to take an active part in Red Cross work. Her campaign
resulted in the establishment of the American branch of the Red Cross
in 1881. She became the first president and held that post from 1882
to 1904. She died in 1912."
