Question ID: 319976
I am looking for opinions and reports on the pattern and
trends (over the next 1-2 years) in Information Technology spending
in the US in the following three sectors (sector names follows
Hoover's classification at
http://www.hoovers.com/free/ind/dir.xhtml)

(i) Transportation
(i) Leisure
(ii) Media

For example, I want to know whether and how much each of these sectors
is spending on technologies such as Web Services / EAI / Workflow
management / Business Intelligence etc .... Also, I would like
information on what sector-specific technologies and products are hot.

I would also like some surrounding information such as

(a) the business reasons behind these investment trends, and the kind
of IT applications companies in each of these sectors is building
around these technologies.
(b) whether these investments are going into custom applications or
off-the-shelf products

Quantitative data as well as qualitative opinions are valuable,
especially when they are from reputed sources such as analyst firms,
universities and research labs.

Thanks!

Analyst reports are proprietary, and I cannot post anything from them
here. However, if I were to review a number of reports and identify
for you a few that answer your questions and provide links to places
where you could view or purchase them, would that suffice?

If the only information available from Answers was not-for-free
analyst reports, that would of limited use. I am assuming that there
must be information available in the public domain that would
supplement analyst reports. If I could get a 30:70 mix of results (30%
pointers to analyst reports and 70% public domain reports) that would
be more useful.
Thanks.

Here's the research I've found in the public domain for the
Transportation category (I've also found fee-based analyst reports).
Can you let me know if this is on the right path before tackling the
others?

I think this is a good start, though some reports are a shade old
(2002). There is also not as much specific information as I expected
on specific vendor technologies (products such as those from
Microsoft, Oracle, Sun etc) that these sectors are leaning towards.
However, the business reasons and drivers are fairly well brought out
in these links. I also think we should be able to get more links in
this sector you explored. I would also prefer sector-level information
rather than industry-level information.
Thanks.

ducksrus -

I have the transportation section finished, but I am running into some
roadblocks with the other categories. For example, as defined by
Hoovers, the leisure sector encompasses:

"Companies that own, operate, or engage in amusement; attractions;
recreation; entertainment facilities, exhibitions, and products;
eateries; lodging; and gaming."

Examples of companies fitting into this category include:

    * World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.
    * McDonald's Corporation
    * Starbucks Corporation
    * Time Warner Inc.
    * Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, Inc.
    * Medieval Dinner & Tournament Inc.
    * Viacom Inc.

It includes everything from doughnuts to cable TV and travel -- not
really conducive to IT spending classifications. Both media and
leisure seem to overlap in the entertainment area. Would
entertainment be OK? Or perhaps pick a subsector in each of the
sectors?

Clarification of Question by ducksrus-ga on 20 Apr 2004 13:00 PDT
Good question and valid concern! And here are the subsectors that are
important to me. (Lists in decreasing order of importance, with the
first three in each list covering 80% of my interest). Entertainment
as you guessed is a key subsector. Hope this helps.

Media
------
- Filmed entertainnment, television
- Publishing
- Information collection and delivery
- Recorded music and radio

Leisure
--------
- Lodging
- Gaming
- Cruise
- Car rental
- Entertainment

Hello Ram -

If you choose to rate this answer, please ask for any clarification or
additional info you may require prior to doing so. Thank you.

There's a company called Wintergreen Research that will allow you to
submit analysis questions of this type, and they will supply custom
research from their databases to answer your questions for around
$1200.  Contact them at susan@wintergreenresearch.com.

Some of these categories are very niche oriented and there doesn't
seem to be a tremendous amount of data for them, especially when
confining the search to the very recent. Some of the links in the
"general" section below may provide high level quantitative statistics
on general trends for all industries.

The response I finally received was good, but what was disappointing
was the incredible delay before a researcher took it up. By the time a
researcher took it up it was "too late" in some ways but useful
nevertheless. Good effort - Thanks!
