Can you help my husband and I find at least 2 breeders who have a chocolate lab
female puppy with green eyes whose parents have been thoroughly
screened to rule out health problems such as epilepsy and hip
problems? This puppy would be ready to leave the breeders home anytime
between now and end of April. We want to be able to take the dog home
somewhere between her 8th and 13th week since birth. We live in
Lafayette Hill, Pa and are willing to drive up to 1.5 hours to get our
puppy.

Hi Sandy and Bill,

I have been in contact with a Lab breeder, and she pointed out that
green eyes do not conform to the standards for the breed and therefore
your search will be difficult.

THE OFFICIAL STANDARD for the LABRADOR RETRIEVER:
"Eyes - Kind, friendly eyes imparting good temperament, intelligence
and alertness are a hallmark of the breed. They should be of medium
size, set well apart, and neither protruding nor deep set. Eye color
should be brown in black and yellow Labradors, and brown or hazel
[light brown or yellow brown] in chocolates."

Are green eyes a priority for you?

Hi again,

I just heard back from another breeder, who is "expecting" chocolate
puppies in April. She confirmed that green eyes are a fault in Labs
and are not offered for sale by recognized breeders.

Hi sandyandbill,

I've compiled a comprehensive list of 10 breeders in Pennsylvania, and
provided links to the 10 breeder's websites, along with all available
contact information. Due to the changeable status of any breeder
listed (puppies are sold, and other various changes) I am not able to
give you a complete rundown on what's available at any moment.

My suggestion, is for you to look over the list and visit the links
provided to get an idea of what appeals to you - not only in distance
but in the quality, temperament, health, and eye color of the puppies
available at this time.

When you see something that you think might fit your needs, contact
the kennel and speak with them. Most all kennel owners I've come in
contact with are more than willing to answer any questions you might
have, along with being very helpful when you choose one of the puppies
for your own.

Some background information on eye color.

I spoke with two kennel owners and was informed that many times the
chocolate labs are born with green eyes, and most often somewhere
between the age of 8 - 12 months the eye color will turn to brown.
However, there **are** chocolates that keep the green eye color
throughout their life. It's very hard to predict which will keep the
green eye color.

Of course, the eye color has nothing to do with the health of the dog,
the temperament or any other aspects.

Lastly, when contacting the breeder do make sure to ask if they know
of any other breeder than might have something in line with your
specifications. Most breeders are familiar with other breeders in
their particular area. They join the same clubs, go to the same dog
shows, etc.

Best of luck to you! :)

Labrador Retriever Breed in Brief
http://www.cc-labrescue.org/profile.html

Labrador Retrievers are normally be 21 to 24 inches tall and weigh 55
to 80 pounds although we get all shapes and sizes of labs in rescue.
Labs come in three colors: yellow, chocolate and black. Yellow labs
normally have a black nose and brown eyes but sometimes have lighter
noses and eyes, chocolate labs normally have a brown nose and brown or
green eyes, and black labs normally have a black nose and brown eyes.

Hartzer's Labrador Retrievers - New puppy - eye question
http://hartzer.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&num=1079360544

Question: Hi - my husband brought a new 7 week old lab. His mother and
father are pure chocolate labs and our puppy is kind of a honey color,
with sky blue eyes. He is a wonderful puppy. Does anyone know if his
eyes will stay blue if not how old are they when they change?

Answer: chocolates will only have brown or green eyes and they start
to turn as early as 5 1/2 weeks to as late as 10 weeks. Black and
yellow labs will only have brown eyes.

All lab puppies are born with blue eyes.

Question: I recently bought a chocolate lab with all the papers but,
it has green eyes. Did I not get what I paid for or is it possible for
a lab to have green eyes.

[edit]

Answer: Michele is unfortunately wrong. While it is true that yellow
or black labs are not to have green eyes, it is acceptable for
chocolate labs to have brown or green eyes, with the latter being a
rare feature, but an acceptable one. A little more research on the net
will show you that this is ok with chocolates.
