Dear grthumongous-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question.

Apparently, according to a variety of sources, Saudi Arabia is indeed
the source of some suicide bomber rewards:

?The Paris-based Agence France Presse reported on Wednesday that the
family of Jamal Nasser received a check for $5,000 from Saudi Arabia
after he killed himself while driving a car full of explosives into an
Israeli bus near Nablus.?

?The Saudis paid about $5,000 to each of 102 Palestinian families of
suicide bombers and others killed in the terror campaign against
Israel.?

?On Wednesday, Saudi Interior Minister Prince Nayef Bin Abdul Aziz
ordered the payment of about $3 million to Palestinian charities.
Nayef did not identify the charities but the official Saudi Press
Agency said the minister urged Saudis to support the Palestinians and
make deposits to a special fund established at all Saudi banks.

Palestinian sources acknowledge that Saudi Arabia has provided money
to the families of suicide bombers. They said charities from such Gulf
Cooperation Council countries as Qatar and Saudi Arabia have relayed
thousands of dollars for the survivors of so-called martyrs.?

?As previously noted, it is common for the families of suicide bombers
to receive large monetary compensation?or better said, reward?for the
?sacrifice? made by their relatives. While Saudi officials angrily
dismissed the evidence released by Israel that accused them of
?financing Palestinian terrorist groups,? they did not dispute further
Israeli claims that large sums of Saudi money go to the families of
suicide bombers. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal
acknowledged, ?the families of the bombers have benefited from
millions in Saudi aid.?Saudi ambassador to England Ghazi Al-Qusaibi
said that he ?approve[s] of the aid going to the families of the
martyrs.??

In spite of these reports, the US seems to be in denial:

?I have no information whatsoever that suggests that the government of
Saudi Arabia is doing what Iraq is," U.S. Defense Secretary Donald
Rumsfeld said at a news briefing last month.?

I don't think 'bounties' may be the word to go.

Yes, I am sure that many affluent saudi's (and many others in other
gulf countries) are paying money to the families of the suicide
bombers.

But it would be wrong to immediately jump to the conclusion that they
are doing so to finance and promote terrorism.

I am sure it is more out of pity that these money are given ....

It is harsh and wrong to judge the people of a country based on your
values. Every person and hence society and country have their own
values and beleif. Most of the western countries have a problem in
understanding and accepting this cultural and value difference between
them and other countries.

It would be in the better interest of the whole world that they start
doing so. And what better way than to begin with yourself?

Yes, because the radical Islamists are so understanding and accepting
of our culture.

While one can argue that the Saudi's are not paying a "bounty" to
suicide bombers; it is a rather species argument. They are
encouraging the practice by paying money so the families that the
bombers leave behind can have funds to live. In a way that is
encouraging the practice, it is taking away the responsibility of the
bomber for taking care of their own family. (I am not for killing the
bomber or the people they bomb.) This is similar to South American
Drug Cartels paying poor people $50,000 US to murder someone. The
person who gets caught is probably going to be sentenced to death or
killed in the asasination attempt, but they do it out of dispair and
hope their family will have a better life.

I see no way to end the Middle East conflict. To me it is the like
the Hatfields and the McCoys, two groups at logger heads in a
perpetual battle because the other group wronged them. (so they have
to wrong them back, etc....)

"I am sure it is more out of pity that these money are given ...."

That is nonsense. Our government (U.S.) needs to stop cuddling with
the Saudi Royal family. If President Bush is serious about fighting
terrorism, a good place to start is Saudi Arabia. Unfortunately,
President Bush and Vice President Cheney have an interest (i.e., oil
money) in maintaining good ties with the Saudis. It is shameful for
both the President and Vice President to continuously pay lip service
to the war on terrorism while kissing the Saudi Royal family's ass
(whom finance various terrorist organizations)--all in the name of
money. What a disgrace!
