Hi vetii,

Even though Zyrtec has a very small list of possible side effects, it
is recommended for humans. If you wish to treat allergic symptoms
your dear Chihuahua has, the best recommendation anyone can give you
is to ask the veterinarian who treats your dog. Your vet will be able
to determine whether it's safe or not. Dogs and humans react
differently to the same medicines.

Zyrtec has a commercial out which is very misleading. I remember
particpating in a survey a while back regarding the commerical long
before it was shown on television.

One of the ads shows a young woman who is suffering from allergies and
is walking her little Boston Terrier dog, Baxter. Another ad shows a
woman with her Papillon, Rufus.

The commercial(s) implies that the dog also suffers from seasonal
allergies. In reality, the commercial is trying to indicate how
humans suffering from allergies will not be able to walk their dogs
without sneezing and coughing and will eventually have to take the dog
home because of the humans' discomfort.

In a subliminal way the ad implies that Zyrtec can be also be used for
dogs who suffer from allergies.

If this is true, only a vet would know - and would know what dose is safe.

"Question: Are you aware of the use of Zyrtec in dogs for treatment of allergies?

Answer: I use Zyrtec with success in one of my dogs. He in 9 and has
severe allergy problems. I use Zyrtec only seasonally, when the
allergies are at their worst, and control the rest of the time with
omega fatty acids and an anti-depressant. I saw a brief mention of
it's use in a dog magazine. I have not found studies of it's safe(or
unsafe)use in dogs, but upon consulting with my Vet decided to try it.
With the Zyrtec, he no longer spends his days trying to eat off his
paws. Before you try any human OTC or RX cure, always consult your Vet
and exhaust all of their possible remedies."
