<Statistics ? mouse usage.
A study by the University of Surrey & Loughborough University looked
at the input methods used in computing. It found that a mouse was the
most commonly used input device. 90 percent of respondents used a
mouse on a daily basis. The extent to which the keyboard shortcuts are
used depends on the task being performed. The most common task that
keyboard shortcuts were used to perform was pasting with 36% of users
using this method.
Table 10 shows the main methods used by respondents to conduct
standard computing tasks. The keyboard shortcuts were used by the
following percentage of respondents:
Open (4), Close (4), Cut (2), Paste (36), Highlight (2), Save (0), Print (2).
The table also shows how often pull down menus, icons on the menu bar
and device buttons were used to activate menus.
Table 9 shows the type of task and the type of input device used. For
example 87% use a mouse for word processing.
Table 20 shows the time, device and intensity in work tasks.
The study also looks at the type of mouse device used.
