Way of Karate

I usually do not recommend a book for martial arts study. A few I

Though Mr. Mattson may blush at his form now--he was a 1st degree and
he is now a 9th degree--it is sufficient to help a student in
self-study.

diagrams, and also includes discussions on the history of martial
arts, its relevance to modern life, proper breathing and stretching,

important to a karete-ka's training regimen, karate's relation to Zen,
and several of Nakamura's own meditation lectures he gives to his own

Given the difficulty of getting the books, you might review some of
these web pages that will give you a good introduction to martial arts
over the web for free:

http://www.ehow.com/list_1074.html

If you visit that page, and scroll halfway down, you'll see a section
called "martial arts" which has 161 links, from the general:

How to Become Proficient at Martial Arts
http://www.ehow.com/how_7615_become-proficient-martial.html

to the highly specific, such as:

How to Defend against a Punch with an Elbow Takedown

or

How to Perform a Double Knife-Hand Block in Tae Kwon Do
