As Microsoft explained, all of this iunformation is stored in the
windows registry which (as you expected) can get very tricky to
navigate.
As commented above, usually when these registry entries are changed it
is a result fo spyware.
There are some other programs that average user's have installed that
would also do this in an attempt to provide "IE Users" where you can
assign a different homepage for each different person who accesses the
Internet from the computer without actually logging off and changing
users.
the most common of these programs are connection software for ISPs.
Based upon which user signs onto the internet, a different homepage
will be displayed.
If this doesnt seem to be the case for you, here is another possible
solution. It is possible to specify what page will load up
automatically by adding a "switch" to the command openin IE (ie the
shortcut).
an easy way to see this for yourself is to right-click on your desktop
and click "new" when the aditional menu opens click "create shortcut".
it will prompt you to type the name of the program you wish to create
a shortcut to. in the box provided type:
explorer ://www.google.com
and click next, delete whatever is in the box that says "Type the name
for this shortcut" and just type in:
Internet
then click finish. A new icon will appear with the name of "Internet",
when you doubleclick on it, www.google.com will open in your web
browser.
using this method ANY program can change the page that actually opens
when you click on that link just by chaning the shortcut. NOTE: this
shortcut will NOT change the actual homepage found in inet options,
only the page that loads when you open IE.
So, the easy way to determine if these are your problems is...
1) Do you use any ISp software that have different logins?
2) Is the actual homepage getting changed or just the page that opens up?
If (1), you will need to open that program under each profile and
change your start page (www.google.com works great) and THEN run the
spyware scans recommended above. |
