This a tough assignment. I have exhausted all possibilities I can think of.
Hopefully, the GA researchers can do it. I would like to purchase a
copy in DVD or video tape format of the 1960 Academy Award winning
short subject, *Day Of The Painter* Issued by Little
Movies/Kingsley-Union Films.
It was a much-admired cult favorite but seems to have disappeared. I
believe the U. of Michigan film library has a 16 mm copy, if that
helps any.

There is no answer at this time.

Researchers may want to be careful not to confuse this 1960 short film
with a 1997 German feature film, "Der Tag des Malers," whose English
title is "The Day of the Painter."

pinkfreud-ga: Thanks, Pinky, for your astute comment. Is there
anything you are not in touch with? Anyway, what I seek is an American
production.

The U. of Michigan does indeed have a copy of the film. So does:

Ball State University
Kent State University
Central Washington University

Of course these are also 16mm format.

Have you tried contacting the "Little Movies" company?

I can't vouch for this guy, since I've had no dealings with him, but
he says he's an expert at tracking down rare movies on video. Might be
worth a try:

Unfortunately, all I could currently add, is that the film is also
available in the Cal State LA library
<http://66.102.11.104/search?q=cache:1Itj1DheP1gJ:pharos.calstatela.edu:5080/library/mmc/FILMS_A.htm+%22Day+Of+The+Painter%22+1960&hl=en>
and has been probably not released on video or DVD, only 16 mm.

pinkfreud-ga: Dear Pinky: Many thanks for your two comments. It is an
honor to hear from you. I contacted moviehunter.

politicalguru-ga: Thanks for your comment. Very likely, you are
correct in surmising that this film has not been available in
videotape or DVD. If all else fails, I shall try to obtain a 16mm copy
and transfer it to DVD.
If those who have given helpful comments wonder why I am so
obsessed, it is for this reason: I am a semi-pro artist (not enough
sales to be a true professional). I am quite good at doing Jackson
Pollock knock-offs. *Day of the Painter* depicts an artist doing a
huge Pollock-style work and then sawing it into sections. A collector
buys one section and the artist then kicks all the remainder into a
lake, where the pieces float away. I can identify with that.

I could be wrong (it happens occasionally), but I believe I saw "Day
of the Painter" on the Bravo cable network several years ago. It's a
long shot, but maybe someone at Bravo could help.

pinkfreud-ga: Dear Pinky: Again, thanks for your input. You are a
paragon of diligence and intelligence. I suspect an attempt to wring
info from the layers of a cable network organization will be
difficult, but it is a possibility.

Hi again, Monroe.

Just wanted you to know that I've exhausted all the tricks I know of,
and haven't yet found you a copy of "Day of the Painter," nor even any
promising leads. I gather that is not uncommon for short subjects,
even award-winning ones, to seemingly drop off the face of the earth
after a few years.

The posting of this comment will boost the question to the top of the
Researchers' queue again. I hope someone with access to more resources
may be able to help.

pinkfreud-ga: Pinky, thanks again for your comments and persistence.
In an odd way, I feel better...if you couldn't find a lead, my
arduous, failed effort is
understandable. As a last resort, I shall attempt to buy a 16mm copy
from a university library.
Best regards,
monroe22
