Ospreyal --
There are several ways to do it, though they deliver VERY different results:
1. Use this Google search strategy, which yields more than 700 results:
"May 4, 1964" (with everything in quotation marks)
What do we get?
* Richard Hofstadter receives the Pulitzer Prize
* "Another World" & "As the World Turns" premiere on TV
* 70 GATT-countries confer in Geneva
* KIII TV channel 3 in Corpus Christi, TX (ABC) begins broadcasting
BrainyHistory
"May 4 Events"

The Beatles song, "This Boy," topped the Canadian pop music charts:

The U.S. imposes a trade embargo on North Vietnam early in the Vietnam War:

2. There are a number of specialized timelines, such as this one from
the History Channel site gives you the ability to look at what
happened in the Vietnam War. Unfortunately it doesn't have a 1964 entry:

3. One of my favorite links is on the Internet via a fee-based
service, Proquest Historical newspapers. It has a full-text search
for the New York Times back to 1851 and has many other newspapers as
well. Many local libraries have access to it for their patrons.
Here's what's in the May 5, 1964 New York Times that would have
happened the day before:
? the Times reports that France is dragging its feet in reducing
tariffs at the Geneva GATT conference (referenced above)
? the Soviet Union and China are bickering over Moscow's presence in
Asia, with the Soviets demanding to be recognized as a major power
there
? Great Britain is planning to send troops to Aden to help in fighting guerrillas
? Mediators are hoping to avert war between Greece and Turkey, both
NATO members, in Cyprus
? Pres. Lyndon Johnson lifts his beagle puppy by the ears, contending
the yelps are from joy -- not that the dog was being hurt
? The Soviet Union shut the office of Time Magazine and kicked its
correspondents out of the country after a cover story on Lenin
? Cairo, Egypt is being decorated in preparation for a visit by Soviet
Premier Nikita Krushchev
