Does anybody know of a way to stop popups? After opening a spam e-mail - which apparently I should not have - pressing the shortcut for internet explorer gives something else which can be deleted by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del but the internet explorer which is underneath it works erratically and sales-pitch screens, pornographic screens and other undesirables keep popping up and eliminate the web site I finally managed to come up with. I have a pentium with windows 95. I also have the cd-rom "Win ultra cleaner" by Business logic but using it helped a little bit only. Can it be used to stop popups? |

Hi, You have basically two problems. The first is getting rid of the problem that you have now, and the second is preventing future popups. As to the first problem, chances are that you have some sort of adware on your computer. To find out what Adware is, see one of these pages: Adware http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,289893,sid9_gci521293,00.html Adware, Spyware and Advertising Trojans http://cexx.org/adware.htm Information on Adware http://www.adware.info/ Information is available on those pages about removing adware. I would also strongly recommend, based on personal experience and numerous recommendations I have read, the following site, where you can download free software that will probably do what you want: Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ The following software is also helpful: Spybot Search & Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php Once you've taken care of that problem, of course, what you want to do is stop future popups. The easiest way to do that is to use a different browser. Both Opera and Firefox can be easily configured to eliminate popups. (So can Internet Explorer, but then you also have to disable JavaScript, making many sites unusable.) Firefox is free, and Opera comes in both free and paid versions. You can learn more about those browsers and download them here: Opera: http://www.opera.com Firefox http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/ If you wish to continue using Internet Explorer, the easiest way to stop popups is to install the Google toolbar: Google Toolbar http://toolbar.google.com As far as Ultra Win Cleaner goes, I checked its specs, and as far as I can tell it doesn't have popup-stopping capabilities. You can find its specs here: Ultra Win Cleaner Utility 2002 http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=287708&pfp=BROWSE I hope you find this information useful. Sincerely, Mvguy-ga This answer was based mostly on personal knowledge. I also performed the following Google searches: Adware ://www.google.com/search?q=adware&sourceid=opera&num=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8 "Ültra Win Cleaner" ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22ultra+win+cleaner%22&btnG=Search |

I reccomend you download Ad-Aware at www.lavasoft.de, the personal version is free. Direct Download: http://download.com.com/3001-8022-10214379.html After installing, click "check for updates now" and click "connect" Then close the update window and click "start" and then "next". Ad-aware will scan (click "next" when it's done) and find the program causing these pop-ups, then click "next" again then "ok", then exit the program, if this doesn't work email me at: andymadigan at yahoo dot com |
