I read recently (on a US university Web page) of a research project
that intended to take photographs of US streets (ie the buildings on
each side of the street), compiling them into a visual database of all
the main thoroughfares in the US.
The project was in its early stages, but discussed how quickly they
could gather the rest of the data.

It was an academic project, but Google was mentioned, I believe as a
sponsor or associate in the project.

I have, of course, now mislaid the link - I think I originally
obtained it via http://BoingBoing.net or http://del.icio.us/ although
I can't find it there now.

Could anyone find a link to that project?

The French Yellow Pages have made it possible to see just about every
building in Paris (and a few other cities) by entering an address, or
clicking on the map until you find the street and address you want.

I found the apartment building I lived in 12 years ago. It's pretty amazing.
