I'd like a recent (less than 6-month-old) list of the top 500 (or so, at least several hundreds) biggest companies (US) sorted by market capitalization, with their market caps included in the list. This should be easy, especially given that this is roughly by definition the S&P 500, and double especially because that means there are dozens of index funds that should be investing in exactly this set of companies. Nonetheless, I haven't yet been able to find such a list myself. To make your job easier, I'll tell you what I've tried so far. Lots of searches on Google and on Yahoo yielded only a page with a set of old lists from 1999-2001, and lots of pages mentioning the top 10-20 companies only. I tried adding to the query some of the companies I knew (or saw from the outdated lists) would be in the top 500 and not just in the top 10-20, but this didn't help. I tried going directly to the S&P 500 website but couldn't find a list with the market caps sorted by them, not even one you have to page through. Perhaps I missed it. I tried going to Vanguard's website but the only helpful thing I could find was their S&P 500 index fund's annual report, which lists the companies that are presumably the right ones, but doesn't include the market caps, only the amount the fund has invested. I tried the Fortune website, but the Fortune 500 as I recall is sorted by revenue, not market cap, and you can't access the list anyway unless you subscribe to the website. |

Sounds like you need yourself a stock screener. If you have an online trading account (e.g. at Scottrade, AmeriTrade, E*Trade, etc), then the odds are good they make a stock screener available as part of their service. If not, you can find several stock screeners online. A good one to use for your purposes is the CBS MarketWatch stock screening tool at: http://cbs.marketwatch.com/tools/stockresearch/screener/default.asp?state=2&siteid=mktw In the section marked "FUNDAMENTALS", check-off the box that says: "with a market capitalization from...to", and in the "from" box enter 1000 and in the "to" box enter 1000000 (no commas) -- this range represents market cap values from $1 billion to $1 trillion, which is a bigger value than any company currently traded. Click the botton labeled "SCREEN", and you should get to a page asking "How would you like to view your screen results?" I clicked on "symbol", "company name" and "market cap"...you can, of course, select others as well, if they are of interest. On the pull-down, select [ Sort by Market Cap ] and click on "descending" order. Also select the maximum of "100 results per page", and click on "SCREEN". You should then get the table you are seeking -- the top stocks sorted by market cap. The first ten entries on the list are: ========== Symbol.............Company Name ..........Market Cap GE General Electric Company $317,574,615,368 XOM Exxon Mobil Corp $286,648,256,102 MSFT Microsoft Corporation $281,957,370,921 PFE Pfizer Inc $278,695,806,157 C Citigroup, Inc. $245,697,139,466 WMT Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. $234,080,412,513 NTES Netease Com Inc n/a DJ_CLDOW Dow Jones Chile Stock ... $208,169,227,714 MBT Mobile Telesystems Ojsc $217,770,874,240 BP Bp Plc $199,489,134,182 ========== By clicking the "Next" button, you can easily move through the first 500 listings (or all 1799, if you so choose). It all worked very smoothly for me. But before rating this answer, please let me know if you run into any difficulties. Just post a Request for Clarification, and I'll be happy to assist you further to make sure you get the list you need. pafalafa-ga search strategy: Google search on: [ stock screener ] | |

There seem to be some non-US companies in the above list (e.g. BP). |
