What was the American Expeditionary Force's charge in 1916?

The American Expeditionary Force didn't exist until Gen. John Pershing
was appointed to head them at the outset of World War I.

However, Pershing similar headed force into Mexico called the
"Punitive Expedition" in an attempt to capture Pancho Villa, who was
conducting cross-border raids at the time.  They failed to capture
Villa but it was the first use of heavier-than-air craft in the U.S.
