Hi winifred,

You're right when you say that soccer is the #1 most watched sport
on TV in Chile. With the ongoing world cup, I doubt if they watch any
other sport. Based on reports from ESPN and online articles and
Chilean directories, I have compiled the following information.

Tennis is at #2. Tennis has gained popularity, especially after the
rise of Marcelo Rios.

Rodeos finds itself at #3. This sport is extremely popular in Chile

   #4 belongs to volleyball.

This is followed by Baseball at #5.

At #6 comes Motor sports, especially the Indy 500, and Formula 1.

The 7th most watched sport is skiing, with preference for slalom.

The top 7 remain unchanged for South America. The Brazilian Ferrari
driver, Rubens Barrichello's success at the Formula 1 races has
increased the interest among the viewers. The following is for South
America as a whole, as I was unable to get matching stats for Chile.

The 8th most watched sport is basketball, especially the NBA
(National Basketball Association).

   At #9, swimming & diving.

And finally, surprisingly, cricket is the 10th most watched sport
in South America. This is due to the West Indies audience (Antigua,
Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad etc..). Recently India toured the West
Indies for a 5 test and 7 ODI series. There are a lot of people of
Indian origin here, and hence the large viewership.

Some may argue that golf should find a place in the top 10, but it
doesn't. In fact, it is at 11.

I hope this answers your question. If you have any clarifications,
please do ask. If you're happy, then so am I.

Cheers,
aditya2k

I just found new information that NFL/Rugby has medium popularity in
Chile, but not in South America as a whole.

I haven't mentioned my sources in the answer as you haven't asked.
Some of my online sources include

ESPN
http://go.espn.com

EL BUSCADOR DE LOS PROFESIONALES DEL DEPORTE
http://sportsciences.com/es/Medios_de_Comunicacion/
(Spanish Document)

TyC Sports - Chile
http://www.tycchile.cl/eventos/eventos.htm

Fox Sports Latin America
http://www.foxsportsla.com/index.sml

Eurodata tv - Sport Rating System & Yearly Sport Audience Reports
http://www.mediametrie.fr/world/produits/eurodatvbis/sportsrating.html

In addition to the above, Sportstar Magazine (published in India, no
online edition) carried an article a few weeks ago about South
American sports.

Furthermore, I watch ESPN, and mentions of viewership are made on an
occassional basis.

Cheers,
aditya2k
