Everyone will recall that Walter Brennan raised this question several
times in the 1945 movie 'To Have and Have Not' but were the words
Hemingway's or some Hollywood scriptwriter's?

Howdy, Bryan.

Loved the movie. Hated the book. The original Hemingway story bears
only a slight resemblance to the film. It has been many decades since
I read "To Have and Have Not," and I haven't been able to find a
searchable online text, but I don't think the "dead bee" bit comes
from Hemingway. I can't prove it, though.

"Howard Hawks inevitably tapped Bogart as the lead for his 1944
adaptation of Ernest Hemingway's To Have And Have Not, which
screenwriters Jules Furthmann and William Faulkner fashioned into a
mini-Casablanca (dressed up with such classic lines as 'Was you ever
bit by a dead bee?' and 'You know how to whistle, don't you?')."

Howdy, Pink

You'se sure gotten me a-talking like youse.

Thanks for correcting my quote (you did it SO nicely).

Me? I would have been VERY sarcastic, which is another good reason
that I shall never be elevated to join youse on Mount Olympus.

I had dinner with Samantha (my younger daughter) tonight. Like me,
she's a great film buff and we had a chat about THAHN (which we both
love) and started speculating about the source of the various great
lines. We both agreed with you.

Regarding the characters, we both adored Hoagy Carmichael, as well.

Many thanks for your Comment.

The pricing of the question was, of course, inspired by Apteryx-ga who
seems to have fallen off the face of the Earth.

I bet that she's sampled too much of Omnivorous-ga's Moonshine.

All the Best

Hey, Freddy

Many thanks for the link.

But, unfortunately, I don't have 'sound' ...

I do have the vid though ... somewhere.

Hi Bryan....

Regarding apteryx-ga's absentiism, I may have a clue for you...

Seems that the GA crew decided a few weeks ago, that our views on a certain
topic were not appreciated, so they deleted our comments to some
related questions as well a question I had asked. Even I hesitate to
post any comments lately, as I feel they may be "monitoring" me. Oh
well, I'm just getting plain *paranoid* in my old age or something...

PS: lets hope this comment stays put...

steph53-ga, can you at least indicate the general topic?

Hi there, guys.

I didn't vaporize. I've just had less playtime lately. Thanks for missing me!

And also, to tell you the truth, I was put off, as Steph53 says--not
by having my comments axed but by the circumstances that provoked them
in the first place.

I'll tell you what the issue was. Both Steph53 and I voiced some
adverse sentiments on the subject of help with homework. We remarked
that, particularly at this time of year, as the school year is ending,
there were so many blatant examples of that phenomenon among the
posted questions that it turned us off and made us feel like not even
checking in for a while. We agreed that we saw a big difference
between helping someone understand a subject or find leads on a
research topic and simply supplying answers to homework questions for
a price. We also remarked that it was alarming to think of consulting
a professional for expert care and advice when that person might have
gained his or her credentials by means of answers purchased from GA
researchers.

A number of distinguished GA researchers responded to Steph53's own
prior question on this subject, generally sharing the same concerns.
That question and all the responses have been removed.

I don't really believe that GA editors are going to penalize any of us
for expressing strong support for the enforcement of GA's own stated
policy. But you might want to write down the number of this question
anyway just to see if it's still here tomorrow.

Hi, Tryxie & Steph

Many Thanks for your Comments!

I saw the thread in question and I was not too surprised when it was
axed, even though it had a Comment by me!

Please don't get the hump ... Editorial Prerogative hits us all from time to time.

It would be great to hear that you've each ordered another wagon of
Omnivorous's Moonshine ... and drowned your sorrows.

In my view, the Galaxy needs you both so, PLEASE COME BACK regardless
of what happens to this or any other Question or Comment.

I love you both!

Thank you, dear Bryan. I made the rounds tonight just so you'll know
I haven't left.

Incidentally, on the matter of pricing and your previous (just for
fun) query, ancientdragon-ga had the nearest thing to an answer.

Tryxie

Great to have you back BUT ...

Are you now telling me that ...

'Like many highly intelligent people' you now prefer pizza to strumming on your
synesthesia?

The Art World will be saddened by the news.

I must confess that I am also very partial to a takeaway from 'Famous Moe's' ...

Had one on Monday night!

All the Best
