According to the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau, a total
of 2,064,130 people live in college dormitories.

From an article in The Chronicle Review dated November 21, 2003

1.8 million Students live in dorms.

Excerpt:

?But the so-called wired students are those undergraduates fortunate
enough to live in dorms -- about 1.8 million students -- not the many
part-time students who live at home, or the full-time juniors,
seniors, and graduate students at public institutions that typically
provide dorm rooms only for freshmen and sophomores. Off-campus
students, like most consumers who have dial-up Internet accounts with
AOL, Earthlink, or MSN, typically have only slow connections to the
Internet.?

?According to the American Council on Education (ACE), about 20
percent of the 14.5 million college students in the U.S. live on
campus.?

That would be 2,900,000 college students living on campus.

The CollegeBound Network: 2001

?In terms of living arrangements, 30 percent of all beginning students
live on campus, 27 percent live off campus, and 43 percent live with
their parents or other relatives. Most two-year and less-than-two-year
institutions do not offer on-campus student housing. At four-year
institutions, almost two-thirds of beginning students live on campus."
