Question ID: 357101
I need to begin to pull together a list of potentially appropriate
songs that might work as background music / film score for a planned
movie whose plot involves lots of money and some rich people (I have
asked a couple questions already on related topics). I would like to
get as complete a list as possible about all songs (of any and every
genre and age) that have money, being rich, luxury, and similar) as
the theme of the song. As an example, there is a song "money, money,
money", and another "diamonds are a girl's best friend" sung by
Marilyn Monroe in a movie. More recently, "get rich or die trying" by
50 Cent. I am looking to try to get about 30 of these, more if at all
possible! Apologies for the open ended nature of the question. For
each song, I will need to know the name of the song and who the artist
is / was, and if possible (although not absolutely required), the year
it was published or performed. At this stage it really doesn't matter
if the song is 200 years old or 2 weeks ago, or if it was performed in
the US or elsewhere. Help will be much appreciated.

Cryptica-ga's reference sounds like a gold mine of information, but it
doesn't appear to contain some of the information about a song that
interests you -- the date it was published, for example, who wrote it,
and a sample of its lyrics, for example. I am confident that I can
give you 30-plus songs with that kind of background information. The
catch is that my expertise and available resources relate mainly to
pre-1950 American popular music. If an answer that is concentrated in
that time period is of interest to you, please let me know.

Clarification of Question by inkvisitor-ga on 06 Jun 2004 18:28 PDT
Yes, thanks, that period with the date published, who wrote it, and a
sample of its lyrics, would be a good answer. And may I thank those
others who have added such helpful comments! Cryptica, please tell
your brother I will be ordering what sounds like a superlative
reference guide momentarily. Mikey172, Pinkfreud, and Daytrader76,
all very helpful inputs -- thanks!

Greetings, inkvisitor!

I believe that I could provide you with a list of pop and rock songs
which got at least some airplay and would be fairly well-recognized by
the general public, ranging from the 70's to the 90's, with the
lyrics, artist, and release date of the album containing it for each
song. This list would not include rap or hip-hop songs. If this is
something that would interest you, please let me know.

Thanks,

aceresearcher

Hi aceresearcher, and thanks for the note. Yes, that would be of
interest, but I need to be cautious, I think, so I don't upset anyone.
I already noted in response to markj that what he proposed would be
fine. I assume then that he will answer and collect the fee? I am
simply trying to avoid crossed wires and thwarted expectations, if
possible. Any suggestions how this might be done? Thanks.

Search Strategy:

Most of the older songs were already familiar to me. I recalled
several without prompting. As for the rest, I scanned my supply of
fake books and music folios to refresh my recollection and was able to
pick them out as I came across their titles. I got the other
information about them by searching for their titles on lyrics sites
and perusing the All Music Guide ( http://allmusic.com ).

I hope that this list is useful to you, and I enjoyed compiling it.
If anything is unclear, please ask for clarification before rating the
answer.

Inkvistor --
Researchers will post tons of material for you, but here's an
invaluable reference source -- created specifically for Radio & TV
stations, ad agencies, film music supervisors, etc. The 5th EDITION
of THE GREEN BOOK OF SONGS BY SUBJECT: THE THEMATIC GUIDE TO POPULAR
MUSIC" by Jeff Green. More than 35,000 songs, 1,800 categories --
and they're cross-indexed by the artist and the CD or Album where
you can find them.

I just took a quick look --there are tons of listings for MONEY, CASH,
GETTING PAID, RICH, TAXES, MILLIONS, WEALTH, SOCIAL CLAS, POVERTY,
GOLD, GREED, LOVE & MONEY. . .etc. Rap, Broadway, Country, Rock,
1920's on up. From "Addicted to a Dollar" to "Your Cash Ain't
Nothin' But Trash." From famous songs to obscure.

The book is in bookstores & libraries or from the website.
http://www.greenbookofsongs.com

Jeff Green is Exec. Editor for Radio & Records. He's also my brother
-- but don't worry -- I don't get a commission! (You'll see that on a
few occasions I've gotten him to chip in some titles for previous
Google queries here.)

Get a p2p program and type those words into the search function.
Shareaza works for me.

Then go to your local shopping mall and pay $17 for each CD, because
downloading them is illegal.

I might add "I Wanna Be Rich" by Callaway.

Two come immedietly to mind: "We're in the Money," a song from the
20s; "I Wanna Be Rich" from the musical "Stop the World, I Want to Get
Off."

Cash is King
Writer: Ike Reilly
Performer: Ike Reilly
Date Recorded: 2001

Had a little money didn't really want it
Got a little more I'm gonna flaunt it
Drink, my kid, meet my friends
Got a brand new ride
(Two-lease package on the side)
Crown Vic bought her on the block
Cash is king and kitten walks

And if you need an anti-money/social conscience closer, there's always
Tracy Chapman ready to hit you in the head with a hammer.

Material World
Writer: Tracy Chapman
Performer: Tracy Chapman
Date Recorded: 1989

You in your fancy
Material world
Don't see the links of chain
Binding blood
Our own ancestors
Are hungry ghosts
Closets so full of bones
They won't close
Call it upward mobility
But you've been sold down the river
Just another form of slavery
And the whole man-made white world
Is your master
You in your fancy
Material world
Create in your own image
A supreme god
Your virgin mary
Your holy ghosts
Claimed to be pure of heart
Have hands that are stained with blood
You in your fancy
Material world
Don't see the links of chain
Binding

How about Liz Phair's "Shitloads of Money", off "whitechocolatespaceegg" (1998):

It's nice to be liked
But it's better by far to get pais
I know that most of the friends that I have don't really see it that way
But if you could give 'em each one wish
How much do you wanna bet?
They'd wish success for themselves and their friends and
That would include lots of money.
