<Those annoying pop-ups can be stopped by installing pop-up blocking
software. A free pop-up blocker can be downloaded from Panic Ware. A
hand symbol will be installed onto your toolbar. You just need to
double click on the hand to enable or disable the pop-up stopper. The
hand will appear white when the blocker is enabled and grey when it is
disabled.

For those really annoying pop ups that have no x to turn them off or
those that completely block out your screen you can use Alt and F4 to
get rid of them.

If your tool bar is not blocked out you can also turn off pop-ups via
the tool bar. The web pages currently open will be displayed on the
bottom right of your tool bar. If you right click on the box
associated with a page, it will come to the front of the screen. A
menu will then appear which gives you the option to close the page.
Right click on close and the page will disappear.

I have downloaded popUpStopper but the hand does not appear in on my
toolbar. Do I have to copy it to the root directory of c: or what else
do I need to do?

Panicware is so poorly understandable and impossible to follow that
rather than beating this dead horse more, and in the course wasting
time and getting nowhere, I am rating and abandoning this question.

Macromedia Flash Player is a program which is needed to run animated
web content. I have found it to be annoying though, since it seems to
add little to web pages, and is used quite often for advertising which
is even more annoying than the pop-up box asking to install Flash
Player, or for animated intros to websites which are unnecessary and
waste bandwidth, slowing down loading of the info you really want.
There are a few websites which actually use this for something useful,
but most of the time it is just an annoyance. So, you can install it,
but be warned, once installed it is not easy to get rid of. Or you
can put up with having to refuse to install each time (and some
webpages will ask you 3 or 4 times, then ask again when you hit the
back arrow back to the same page).

Or there is a program called TurnFlash available at
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22947,00.asp
which will put an icon in your system tray that you can toggle it on
and off with. This way the site will not ask to install Flash Player,
but it also will not work and annoy you, unless you toggle it on for
the rare sites that really need it.

Installing flash player is safe, but if you are on dial up it can be a
bandwidth hog. To delete flash player, go to c:\windows\download
program files and right click on the SHOCKWAVE FLASH OBJECT and go
remove.

Thank you, icemanwol-ga, for advising me how to delete macromedia
flash player. However going to c:\windows\download program files does
not give me SHOCKWAVE FLASH OBJECT.
After playing around for quite a while I found that c:, windows, (show
files),systen, (show files), macromedia does give me shockwaves. So
does windows/system/macromedia in DOS.

If I get to macromedia this way can I delete it with your suggested
"rightclick - delete" in windows or with "deltree" in DOS? once
deleted can I recover it if I ever need it, say from the win98
installation disk? Or would it be advisable to save macrpmedia and
subdirectories to elsewhere using DOS's xcopy?
