Question ID: 361751
Using as an example the following statement of general goals, is
hypnotism a viable tool to accomplish them? The premise is that I know
what I need to do, or how to get the information I need when I don?t.
The problem lies in more effectively applying time and energies toward
those goals .

Assuming I can be readily hypnotized, what would be involved?
?	Number of sessions over what time period
?	Approximate budget required
?	Follow-ups/maintenance/tune-ups?

I would also require recommendations of hypnotists in the New York
City, Long Island area, along with feedback/testimonials from people
who have used the services of these providers; both positive and
negative, not love letters

Statement of goals-
1.	Focus all energies on best providing for family by effectively
shaping business activities that will best accomplish that, while
maintaining a fair balance of time split between work and home.
2.	To the best of my ability, based on experience and advice, make
business decisions that have the best long-term prospects for monetary
return, even if these decisions are challenging and require
significant change.
3.	To resolve barriers to better delegation of tasks that will free my
time to apply most directly to the most important issues.
4.	Refrain from compulsive time-wasting activities that do not assist
in these goals, but be able to distinguish between reasonable personal
use of time (making music, reading), and non-productive time-wasters
(senseless internet surfing)
5.	Get required sleep- suppress racing thoughts that are counter to goals

I?m going to start this off with a disclaimer. I honestly believe in
the benefits of hypnosis. My own mother, who was a smoker for 25
years, stopped in 1 session of hypnosis and has not smoked in over 2
years. I do believe it?s a valid medical treatment that can help with
many issues. However, in doing research for your question, want you to
understand there are 2 sides to every story, and you have to make your
own judgment in the end. Not everything works for everyone.
------------------------------------------------------------

Here is an interesting excerpt from a webpage on the history of hypnosis.

?FACT: Hypnosis is older than recorded history. Thousands of years
ago, primitive people in Africa and Australia used chanting, drums,
and the fixation of their eyes to achieve the state we now know as
hypnosis. They were able to effortlessly perform amazing physical
feats and easily endure situations that would ordinarily cause
excruciating physical pain.

FACT: For 200 years scientists, physicians, surgeons, theorists and
researchers have been using and studying what we now call hypnosis.

FACT: What we now call hypnosis originated with an 18th century
Austrian healer named Franz Anton Mesmer (1734-1815), who hypothesized
that the magnetic pull of the heavenly bodies influence the human
body. This theory was called animal magnetism, and later, mesmerism.
Though Mesmer produced astounding results and healed many people
without medicine or surgery, Mesmerism was widely criticized. Mesmer
was soon associated with the occult and accused of flagrant
charlatanism. He didn?t get the approval of the scientific community,
but his efforts were not for naught. None other than Benjamin Franklin
was on the committee that investigated him, and Franklin thought
Mesmer?s claims and abilities were worthy of further consideration.

FACT: In the early 1800?s several pioneering Frenchmen continued
investigating and experimenting with mesmerism. Eventually, in 1843,
it was a well-respected Scottish surgeon named James Braid
(1795-1860), who used the term ?hypnotism? and differentiated it from
mesmerism.

FACT: Hypnosis was successfully used as anesthesia for thousands of
operations before chloroform and ether were discovered and later (and
slowly) accepted for use during surgery.

FACT: Hypnotism was widely used by physicians and psychologists
during World War I and World War II to treat battle fatigue and mental
disorders resulting from war.

FACT: The British Medical Association and the Council on Mental
Health of the American Medical Association have unanimously endorsed
hypnosis.

FACT: Hypnosis is now frequently used in medicine, dentistry and
psychotherapy. It is used as a part of the treatment of
psychiatric/psychological disorders, the effects of incest, rape and
physical abuse, allergies, anxiety and stress management, asthma,
bed-wetting, depression, sports and athletic performance, excessive
self-consciousness, smoking cessation, obesity and weight control,
sleep disorders, high blood pressure, sexual dysfunctions,
concentration, and test anxiety.

Modern Hypnosis

By far, the most influential figure in modern hypnosis is Dr. Milton
H. Erickson (1901-1980). Erickson used myriad verbal stratagems and
guided imageries to help patients access their own inner abilities to
heal themselves and optimize their performance in many areas of their
lives. One of the most profound of Erickson?s contributions was that
the subconscious can be indirectly accessed to promote healing. In
other words, when he was hypnotizing his patients, he didn?t tell them
what they were feeling (e.g., you are getting sleepy?). Instead, he
suggested to them that they might consider feeling a certain way
(e.g., ?perhaps you might notice that you are feeling sleepy?). Milton
was able to put someone into a deep trance in a short period of time
without mentioning the word ?hypnosis? at all.

This might not seem to be a big difference, but it is, because it puts
the patient in a position of personal control and freedom. They have
their free will and can choose whether to, for instance, get sleepy.
When we feel a sense of control, relaxing and accessing the
subconscious is easier and more likely to occur.

Erickson also pioneered the use of verbal strategies that are very
closely related to Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP-to be discussed
in the next chapter). He realized that the way the mind processes
certain words, combinations of words, words with multiple meanings,
and even pauses and longer silences, profoundly affects what they mind
thinks and what the body does. This will become clear in the next
chapter, but for now, understand that Erickson demonstrated that
language is an extraordinary persuasive tool. It can engender positive
change/negative change, it can increase/decrease performance, it can
increase/decrease physical and mental pain, and it can even help an
individual to consciously control bodily functions that are usually
not under our control (e.g., your heart rate).

Erickson was at the forefront of clinical study and research
demonstrating that the unconscious can be responsible for many of our
psychological problems and dysfunctional behavior. He amassed a group
of zealous followers dedicated to furthering his work, and when he
passed away in 1980 those followers started schools of applied
psychology based on his work.

As we?ll see in the next chapter, Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP)
is one of those schools of applied psychology, which is influenced by
the Ericksonian model of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First of all, let?s talk about what hypnosis is?
Hypnosis is a method of a mental programming. It isn?t
unconsciousness. It is not a giving up of control. It is actually an
altered state of highly focused consciousness in which the conscious
mind is bypassed and the subconscious mind is directly accessed. The
subconscious mind is far more powerful than the conscious mind. It is
the seat of all memory and through it can be accessed memories,
emotions, and events suppressed or repressed by the conscious mind.
The subconscious mind can reveal facts, information, and causes of
feelings, behaviors, and attitudes which in turn can be created,
strengthened, modified, or eliminated according to the client's
needs.?
You can read a much longer explanation here:
http://www.hypnos.co.uk/hypnomag/peltbook/chapter2p1.htm
-------------------------------------------
They get you into such a relaxed state, that your subconscious is open
to suggestion. However, the body has a natural response mechanism in
place that will not allow them to implant anything that goes against
what you believe in. You will not harm yourself, or get naked and run
around an office. Your morals and decency are still in place.
?During Hypnotherapy, usually a client and therapist are working
toward the same goal so a light to medium depth will usually be
sufficient because of the client?s will to change or improve.
However, during Stage Hypnosis, a much deeper state of trance is
generally necessary to achieve some of the more spectacular and
humorous routines expected of the hypnotized volunteers. Their
critical faculties (desire and ability of the conscious mind to judge
and reason) have become lessened to such a degree that they?re usually
happy to follow the Hypnotist?s suggestions without question. It?s as
if the Hypnotist has become the volunteer?s conscious mind and is
supplying the subconscious directly with suggestions. In addition,
because the subconscious usually just accepts what it is given, it
takes and responds to those suggestions - up to a point!
If the morals, ethics, or physical boundaries of the volunteer are
challenged too far, then there are several likely outcomes. The
volunteer may break the trance; remain hypnotized but refuse to
comply; or maybe refuse to awaken from the trance altogether. Knowing
that awakening may mean partial or even full compliance with the
suggestions, where no compliance is acceptable, then remaining in a
trance state can be a means of escape from the unacceptable
suggestions.
Therefore, where Hypnosis is concerned, working with a person?s
expectations of achieving a trance will help immensely in the
induction of that trance. When working within the moral, ethical and
physical boundaries of any hypnotized person, it becomes far more
likely that that person will comply with any of the suggestions given.
?

------------------------------------

In addition, hypnotism can not turn a illiterate person into a speed
reader with college comprehension overnight. It can alter behaviors
that cause actions, but it?s can?t teach you a new behavior you know
nothing about. Hypnotism is not how to become an athlete or a dancer
if you have no idea how to dance. However, if you never danced because
of fear of embarrassment, hypnosis can get you out on the floor in
just a few sessions. Make sense?

There are two main styles of Hypnotherapy:
Suggestive Hypnotherapy and Analytical Hypnotherapy.
Suggestive Hypnotherapy
This involves gathering info from you about your problems and how you
would like to improve them. You will be asked questions about
expectations and why you?re seeking this treatment. There may be no
need for you to speak during this style of Hypnotherapy. Generally,
you will be sitting or lying in a relaxed state listening to. You will
probably be relatively aware of everything being spoken to you as you
enjoy the relaxed feelings.
Analytical Hypnotherapy
This style of Hypnotherapy usually involves the use of a procedure
referred to as "regression.? Put simply, regression is "remembering
past events that are locked in your subconscious". Sometimes an event
in your past that has been long "forgotten" can still have an impact
on your present, and by accessing your "memory banks" the
Hypnotherapist (with your help) can often modify that memory, so it
has less negative effects on your present and future. . Regressive
Hypnotherapy will usually involve conversation between you and the
Hypnotherapist.
http://www.nzhypnosis.com/hypnotherapy.html
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, you listed a list of goals
Statement of goals-
1.	Focus all energies on best providing for family by effectively
shaping business activities that will best accomplish that, while
maintaining a fair balance of time split between work and home.

Hypnosis can help you over come a roadblock that you may have
subconsciously put up. Now, for this goal, it sounds like you want to
learn how to direct your business activities so that they are more
advantageous, and to balance out the time you split between work life
and home life.

Now, hypnosis can?t teach you how to make better business decisions.
Learning to make better decisions regarding matters such as that is
something that is learned. The hypnotist can?t just go in and day,
?you?ll make better decisions?. There needs to be a reason why you
make those decisions. For example, if you make rash decisions because
you have a fear of missing the opportunity the decision could possibly
give you, hypnosis could release that fear, allowing you to feel that
you have the time to look things through. Thus, causing you to make
better decision in the future but this is not 100% ?curable.?
If you don?t know long division for example, it can?t teach you it,
but if your patience is thin with it and your angry all the time, it
can teach you to relax and do it 1 step at a time without feeling like
a failure, which in turn, could improve your performance.

As far as balancing out time, if you have a reason why you spend more
time with the other, for example, worry over upsetting your family, or
not getting ahead unless you work a 60-hour week, it can work on that.
However, they can?t program a response that reminds you to go home at
5:30 PM every day. See what I?m saying.

Hypnosis works on the WHY you do things and works on correct them; it
can?t teach you a skill you don?t already have.
-------------------------------------

2.	To the best of my ability, based on experience and advice, make
business decisions that have the best long-term prospects for monetary
return, even if these decisions are challenging and require
significant change.

Once again, it can teach you not to have a fear of the challenge and
the change, but you have to have the knowledge about both sides of the
decision to make the best one. Hypnosis can?t turn you into Bill Gates
overnight, if that makes sense. You?re not going to be able to have
the correct answer all the time because of it.
-----------------------------------------------------

3.	To resolve barriers to better delegation of tasks that will free my
time to apply most directly to the most important issues.

This is a great one. Most of the time, a barrier to delegation is
fear the work will not be done to par. I believe hypnosis would work
wonderfully on this, because it has to do with fear and trust, which
are defiantly in your subconscious.
------------------------------------------------------------

4.	Refrain from compulsive time-wasting activities that do not assist
in these goals, but be able to distinguish between reasonable personal
use of time (making music, reading), and non-productive time-wasters
(senseless internet surfing)

Time management is usually also something hypnosis can help with. A
lack of dedication or feeling like you need to slack off
subconsciously could be the result of feeling pressured all of the
time, like you have to please everyone, so when you do get ?me? time,
you waste it on things that are not productive to your self
enrichment. Web surfing vs. reading or learning an instrument was your
examples of this.
------------------------------------------------------------

5.	Get required sleep- suppress racing thoughts that are counter to goals

Insomnia is a very treatable condition with hypnosis.
?Used in conjunction with improvements to sleep hygiene, hypnosis is
effective in improving the quality of sleep. Hypnosis can be used to
uncover reasons for the insomnia dealing with subconscious fears and
anxieties. Hypnotic suggestions can be used to help the insomniac to
have an easy, normal sleep.?
http://www.holisticonline.com/Remedies/Sleep/sleep_ins_hypnotherapy.htm

?Sleep Problems and Insomnia
Hypno-therapists will tell you that most sleep problems (which are
not caused by a medical problem) are quickly eliminated using hypnosis
or self-hypnosis. For most people they can sleep better than ever
before after a few sessions with a qualified hypno-therapist, or by
taking a self-hypnosis class. It is amazing how hypnosis has helped
many people when nothing else would work!?
http://www.hypnosiscenter.com/mazingo/insomnia.htm
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Now, onto a different part of your question.
Assuming I can be readily hypnotized, what would be involved?
?	Number of sessions over what time period
?	Approximate budget required
?	Follow-ups/maintenance/tune-ups?

Now, there isn?t a definite answer on these questions. Some people can
be done in just 1 or 2 sessions, some people require more. The reason
for this is how open and willing you are to the suggestions.
Many Hypnotherapists can substantially improve your life in just one
or two sessions, whereas some will insist on multiple sessions. Some
Hypnotherapists will offer you a fixed number of sessions for a
specific issue when you initially contact them, or suggest a number
that you may require. Soon after your trance, the Hypnotherapist's
suggestions may still have some effect, so if in any doubt as to the
necessity for extra or multiple sessions, then this is not the time to
discuss them. Take the time afterwards to decide how much assistance
you've already gotten and how much better it could be with more
visits.
-----------------------------------------------------------

Now, for hypnosis in your area?. I tried contacting most of these
offices for rates, and got answering machines. Since I wanted to get
you a timely answer, I feel that it may be more beneficial to you to
call and leave a MSG to get rates for your specific situation. As far
as reviews, the best way to get an accurate idea, is to ask the
specific professional you contact for former customers you can contact
for a recommendation. Most legit and good professionals will have no
problems supplying their references to you. However, due to privacy
issues surrounding the medical field, these may not be available.

This request was posted in the wee hours, and the response came in
about 11 am the next day. The speedy reply hijacked the possibility of
any depth of reply about rates. The more troubling unanswered aspect
of the inquiry is in the recommendations. What I got was more of a
yellow page listing. There are a lot of la la practitioners from what
I can see, and what prompted me to initiate the search was the desire
to find a real unbiased referral or two from an in-the-know source as
well as an exploration into the suitability of hypnotism as a vehicle
to meet my goals (which was very adequately addressed).
Is this searchable?

Clarification of Answer by nenna-ga on 29 Jun 2004 08:51 PDT
Hello again,

As far as the rates, I had mentioned I got answering machines. I did
get about 5 phone calls back from various practitioners and they all
stated that the cost is based on the specific situation a lot of
times, that they could not give an accurate quote over the phone.
Therefore, I could not list that information for you since I do not
know how you will respond to hypnotism and the number of sessions you
will need.
In addition, the practitioners I listed were all medical hypnotists in
practices and not stage or show hypnotists. I did check to make sure
that they were all licensed. Also, when I did ask about reviews to the
practitioners that called me back, they stated what I knew already,
that they would be happy to put you directly in contact with patients
to get a review, however, due to Google Answers policy, I can not post
that information here for you, since we are not allowed to give out
personal contact information for individuals.

I hope this clears things up for you. I wish I could give you definite
answers on the rates, but since it is a case by case basis most times,
I was not comfortable giving you what could be less than accurate
information. Is there anything else I could help you with?

To get an idea:

A ballpark figure, per this site, is $80 for a 60 to 90 minute session.

This hypnotherapist's fee is $125 USD per session

Thanks for the information on here it's really clarified the situation.
I found a lot of information relating to self hypnosis at
http://self-hypnosis.need2knowmore.com. I used self hypnosis when I
was a naval officer studying for my captain's exam together with Photo
reading.
