Question ID: 362179
I need to know the top 20 or more stroke rehabilitation centers in the
US. I would like to know about some of the statistics of these the number of patients...or some reason why they
were chosen. (Of course I also need the address and the phone.....and
maybe the names of who are in charge because we need to pick one). I
want them to be the ones that treat alot of patients. If you have a
list with more than that on it, that is OK....but I need to have
statistics of the places.

I do not need to know the hospitals that treat stroke, like with
neurosurgeons...but need to know the hospitals (or centers) that are
the biggest for the rehabilitation AFTER the stroke.

Can someone PLEASE help!!! You can ask me any questions and I will
give you the best answers that I have.

Hello crystal4290-ga,

According to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and
Strokes, ?Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading
cause of long-term disability in the U.S. There are approximately 4
million Americans living with the effects of stroke. In addition,
there are millions of husbands, wives, children and friends who care
for stroke survivors and whose own lives are personally affected. ? My
research revealed that although this is a very common disease the
treatment and rehabilitation is very individualistic and requires a is
tailored rehabilitation program. Fortunately, there is lots of
information available to help you understand the issues involved, the
likely progress of treatment, rehabilitation and recovery and criteria
to use to evaluate specific programs. I?ve included a collection of
links to help you with these issues.

As you requested, I?ve also found a reputable survey for ranking the
top rehabilitation hospitals. The ranking criteria are clearly defined
in the survey description and are noted for the profile of each
institution rated. The ranking report provides each hospital?s
address, ranking and link to the hospital?s rehabilitation program web
page. From there you can explore each program and use their contact
information links to continue your explorations.

I hope that you find this information helpful. Please don?t hesitate
to ask for clarification if any of this is confusing.

Best wishes for finding a rehabilitation program that will serve your needs.

Ranked hospitals in this specialty were named by at least 3 percent of
board-certified physicians responding to U.S. News surveys in 2001,
2002, and 2003.

Rank	Hospital Reputational score
1	Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago	72.2
2	TIRR-The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research, Houston 42.3
3	University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle 37.7
4	Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn.	30.7
5	Craig Hospital, Englewood, Colo. 26.7
6	Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation, West Orange, N.J. 26.1
7	Rusk Institute, NYU Medical Center, New York	15.1
8	Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia	15.0
9	Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, Boston	14.7
10	Ohio State University Medical Center, Columbus	14.2
11	Rancho Los Amigos National Rehabilitation Center, Downey, Calif. 13.5
12	Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore	12.7
13	National Rehabilitation Hospital, Washington, D.C.	11.2
14	University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor	9.5
15	Moss Rehabilitation Hospital, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia	8.1

20	UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles	3.8
21	New York-Presbyterian Hospital	3.8
22	Cleveland Clinic	3.7
23	University of Alabama Hospital at Birmingham	3.3

***** The ranked rehabilitation hospitals are all linked to a summary
page which provides a ranking profile, address and link to the
specific rehabilitation program.

In 13 of the 17 specialties, ranked hospitals initially had to meet
any of three entry standards: membership in the Council of Teaching
Hospitals, affiliation with a medical school, or availability of at
least nine of 17 specified items of medical technology?magnetic
resonance imaging, for example. Those criteria screened out all but
2,072 of the 6,003 hospitals.

The four other specialties (eyes, pediatrics, psychiatry, and
rehabilitation) were treated differently. This is because mortality
data are unavailable in pediatrics and are largely irrelevant in eyes,
psychiatry, and rehabilitation. So hospitals in these specialties are
ranked solely on reputation.

One of the most vital aspects of quality of life is independence: the
ability to function physically, think clearly, fulfill
responsibilities and enjoy family and friends. When the disabling
effects of a stroke threaten that independence, stroke survivors can
regain their quality of life through a comprehensive rehabilitation
program at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.
