In or around 1939, FDR reputedly pledged that he would never send
America's sons to fight in a foreign war (or words to that effect).

Where? When? Did he repeat this pledge? & The exact quote, please.

(I won't ask whether or not he fulfilled the pledge because I am
assuming that he did.)

Many thanks.

Hello PBP,

The quote is:

"I have said this before, but I shall say it again and again and
again; your boys are not going to be sent into any foreign wars."
- FDR, Speech in Boston, October 30, 1940.

Here's a larger excerpt from the complete speech:

"And while I am talking to you mothers and fathers, I give you one more assurance.
I have said this before, but I shall say it again and again and again:
Your boys are not going to be sent into any foreign wars.
They are going into training to form a force so strong that, by its
very existence, it will keep the threat of war far away from our
The purpose of our defense is defense."

Additional sources:

FDR did make similar statements in other campaign speeches prior to
the November 5, 1940 election. For example:

"And I can cite to you many, many other examples of rumors that have
been started in the same rumor factory?all of them untrue, but every
one of them tending to make people believe that this country is going
to war.
Your President says this country is not going to war."

FDR - Remarks at Buffalo, New York
November 2, 1940

search strategy:
"delano roosevelt" "never send"
"Your boys are not going to be sent into"
"again and again; your boys are not going "

I hope this helps.
