Looking for an article/poem titled "The Trip to . . " or "The Road to
. . " about a parent of a child with developmental disability --
possibly Down's -- the point of which is that we often wind up in a
different place than we plan, but all destinations have their own
blessings and rewards. Original appeared in a Dear Abby or Ann Landers
column. |

Hello Amosmom
Is this the kind of thing you were looking for?
"Dear Friends and Family
Our beautiful daughter, XXX, was born XXX. We want to add a personal
note to this announcement because we would like you to know that XXX
was born with Down Syndrome. In the last couple of weeks we have
experienced many different emotions, and have learned a great deal
about all the positive ways Down Syndrome can affect our daughter and
our family.
XXX is a beautiful, responsive baby, and we hope you will accept her
into your hearts without pity or reservations. Please don't feel that
you have to pretend that she is 'normal', and please feel free to ask
us any questions you may have about her.
With the help of God and her family we hope XXX will grow up strong
and healthy. We want you to share in the joy of her progress along the
road to maturity. Although she may travel that road a little slower
then others, we will consider each new milestone in her life a
blessing. Though our hurt and dissapointment may still be fresh, we
know that God has placed XXX in our home and in our hearts for a very
special purpose. Someone told us 'God doesn't make mistakes; that
little girl was meant to be in your family for a special reason.' We
also know that our lives will be touched by all the special gifts XXX
will sbring to her friends and family. Her presence has already filled
our hearts and home with much love and happiness. Please celebrate her
birth with us."
If this was the article you were looking for please let me know and I
can post it as an official answer for you.

I am certain that you are remembering "Welcome to Holland," as linked
in the "Comments" section below. This beautiful essay about becoming
the parent of a developmentally disabled child has been published
several times in "Dear Abby."
I would be delighted to gather more information about the background
of "Welcome to Holland" if that would provide a satisfactory answer
for your question.
