this is not the full quote. It reads: "it does not matter if the war is not real. For when it is, victory is not possible. The war is not meant to be won, but it is meant to be continuous.'" "A hierarchical society is only possible on the basis of poverty and ignorance, this new version is the past and no different past can ever have existed. In principle the war effort is always planned to keep society on the brink of starvation. the war is waged by the ruling group against its own subjects and its object is not the victory over either Eurasia or east Asia but to keep the very structure of society in tact" |

How about: "People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." George Orwell |

George Orwell did NOT say, "People sleep peaceably...". It's a very common misattribution quoted especially frequently in the military and in right-wing circles. See: http://www.military-quotes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=399 This is especially ironic because quoting him as saying this is the ultimate in double-speak. Hypothetically if he had said it, though, he would not have meant it to mean "...violence on their behalf without any good reason or justification and done under the cover of lies and secrecy, and sometimes directed even at them." |
