Some pyschologist, philosopher or whatever before 1968 was saying to
the effect:"every day in every way I am getting better and better".
He died by killing himself. Who was he?

This should be interesting.

Hello.

I believe that you're thinking of Émile Coué.

From the Encyclopaedia Britannica:

'Coué, Émile
born Feb. 26, 1857, Troyes, Fr.
died July 2, 1926, Nancy
French pharmacist who in 1920 at his clinic at Nancy introduced a
method of psychotherapy characterized by frequent repetition of the
formula, "Every day, and in every way, I am becoming better and
better." This method of autosuggestion came to be called Couéism.'

Some have claimed that Coué killed himself. For example, see this
newsgroups message:
"It was more of a 1920's thing -- it was started by someone called Emile Coue,
who said you should say to yourself "Every day, in every way, I'm getting
better and better," which always cracks me up (I think he ended by committing
suicide, anyway!)."

However, this French web page indicates that pneumonia was Coué's cause of death.

Pneumonia is listed as cause of death by findagrave.com
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=8745

-----------
search strategy:
"every way" "getting better and better
" better and better" coue

I hope this helps.

Genius - before his time. Achieved amazing recovery rates with his
patients. Most people still don't understand why though. One book
which provides a good explanation of why (and attributes Coue with
thie quote and discusses his work) is "Mind Power into the 21st
Century" by John Kehoe. Have a nice day.

My understanding is that he was a pharmacist who was horrified when he
discovered that he had dispensed the wrong prescription to one of his
customers.

He was then amazed when the patient recovered!

This, evidently, caused him to question the whole concept of French medicine.

But then the French do everything different.

Vive la difference!

Doesn't John Lennon use this line a tune? Beautiful Boy maybe. Not
that I'm trying to compare him to Coue...

You might have seen it in a Pink Panther movie. Commissioner Dreyfus
(Herbert Lom) made it his mantra while recovering from the maddening
effect of Inspector Clouseau.
